    Todd,
I just saw your original post for the first time and want to thank you for the tip and the affirmation … while trying to occupy myself during a dreaded trip to Walmart with my wife 10+ years ago, I noticed a frosted vinyl shower curtain’s similarity to lighting frost. Ever since, I would stop at Walmart on the way to these types of shoots to buy a few $3-5 shower curtains despite ridicule from the crew when I literally pulled shower curtains from my gear bags (of course, that inevitably stopped when they saw the results in situations they had yet to figure out a better solution for than the expensive “fix it in post” approach). So, thanks for pointing out where to buy the same material in bulk … and for finally giving me affirmation that I’m not crazy … correction, that particular idea wasn’t crazy.

LOL I didn’t even notice the typo, but love the COW for the poignant humour as much as the knowledge … especially that Mark Suszko … I still think you’re a funny guy, Mark. ;~)

Glad to help, David. FYI, ProRes isn’t “uncompressed” either … it’s compressed with the proprietary Apple ProRes codec … “uncompressed” means there is no compression done to the media … it is just encoded to a particular “uncompressed” codec such as the AJA or BlackMagic Uncompressed codecs, which come in both 8-bit and 10-bit varieties. There is no advantage to using an uncompressed codec for media that did not originate as uncompressed (such as DV compressed footage).

Off hand it looks like S-Video (aka Y/C), but I haven’t dug up an S-Video cable and counted the pins … there are also a number of other far less common connectors that look very much like S-Video, but have a different number or configuration of pins and are almost unique to the single device they were intended to plug into.

You seem to not want to do this, but what makes most sense is to move that 50Mb file and all other common files into one common folder, delete the copies of them and reconnect the media in the AE projects so that only one copy of each file that is used in multiple projects exists on your hard drive. If you don’t already have a backup of your entire hard drive, keep two copies of the common files, but 20 copies is definitely not necessary … especially if there all on the same hard drive, that’s just wasted space.

Just make sure you get Krylon … there are several knock-off brands out there that are very poor products … don’t spray on evenly, don’t come off of some surfaces they should cleanly and/or just don’t work.

It sounds like you have your RAM Previews set to skip frames … check the various RAM Review options in the playback panel. If it’s set to skip only one or two frames, the playback will still seem smooth since it’s pretty hard to visually notice 1-2 skipped frames.

You should be able to just click on any vertex to edit … is that not working? Perhaps give more detail of what you’re trying to do … scale the shape as-is, change the shape of the shape?

May 2, 2011 at 11:30 pm in reply to: Change Image Source?

I’m not at all implying there is anything at all wrong with the method Brian suggested … this is just to give you an option since one of the greatest things about AE is that there’s several ways to do everything … it’s good to know multiple methods since each has pros and cons that can make it more or less suitable for different needs.

You could also precompose the image layer and leave its attributes in the main comp (so the animated keyframes don’t move into the precomp, which is a choice you’re given whenever you precompose). Then, you can change the image in the precomp as many times as you like. Some people consider a downside of this method to be that you need two comp viewers to see what you’re doing, but I always work with two viewers anyway so it’s a non-issue for me. The upside of this method is that, if you have to change the image a hundred times, you don’t have to wade through all hundred layers in your main comp.

    Dave,

I understand what you mean, but before answering, have to first clarify that you do not want “uncompressed” since there would be no gain in quality by transcoding DV footage up to Uncompressed so the only thing that would accomplish is a much, much larger file.

The export setting that results in files that are identical in size and quality to the original captured media is always the export setting that is identical to the capture setting (unless the media has been altered in FCP) … in this case, DV NTSC 48kHz Anamorphic. You just need to trim each of several instances of the footage to one-third (or one-fourth) the total length before exporting. It might be easiest to count on 4 DVDs since it’s hard to divide a video file into three exactly equal parts and you don’t get a full 4Gb of write space on a DVD so one or two of the files may end up 4.2Gb and not fit on a DVD.

Another way is to duplicate the captured file from the Capture Scratch folder three times, trim each down in QuickTime Pro and export them from QTP without even going into FCP. That can be more difficult to explain if you’re not accustomed to using QTP for that kind of thing so the first method seemed safest.
