I think you will need to use the 625/50 option, which by now you have probably tried.

With so many scanning rates, it can be very confusing, especially in the NTSC countries.
Here in Australia it is 25p or 50i (even though there is the 1080 and 720 to contend with) but thankfully no drop frames as I cannot get my head around it. Then again, I have never needed to.

Great question as I am going in a similar direction with HDCAM and HDV shortly.

Thanks to Walter and Bob for their feedback. I agree with both Walter and Bob with the Sony HDV. I am looking to HDCAM with HDV support/backup and I too am waiting and looking forward to the HVR-1500.

Just yesterday I was thinking how exciting it will be to have HDSDI instead of firewire.

Walter and Bob, do you both recommend a 4gbit Fibre Channel setup over say a properly optioned Caldigit type 3gb SATA RAID?

M100 always advise waiting till your current project is complete before upgrading. From the M100 details, although 11.5 is a “big” upgrade, upgrading it now, mid project will not value add to the project so I have always finished work in progress before upgrading, just in case.

If you really want to upgrade, back everything up at least twice and don’t forget to save your program backups.

I would wait. More incentive to finish the project!!!

With Caldigit, the RAID configurations are 0 for performance, 10 for protected or a concatenation of disks commonly know by the acronym JBOD (Just A Bunch Of Disks), which is the disks combined together to create 1 large capacity drive.

The FC style disks can have many more RAID configurations, depending on the vendor, including RAIDs 3, 5 6 and more.

Lots more to it but this is just a very brief overview.

Take a look at Caldigit’s website as it really seems to be exactly what I am looking for at least. Maybe it may suit your requirements as well.

I have been investigating the drives issue for some time now. It depends on who you speak to and what they have to sell.

First and foremost 4Gbit Fibre Channel SATA drives in say a RAID (5 maybe) would be great but very costly for 5 to 8Tb to ensure a reasonable amount of 10 bit uncompressed HD. Of course you can start with a smaller setup.

Then there are the non fibre channel 3Gb SATA drives from companies like Caldigit (who advertise here). All reports are very positive and the feedback from users praise the company for its product quality and support. The drives come in various setups.

The “downside” is that the 3Gb units are restricted in their RAID configurations while the FC units have greater RAID choices.

I am still looking into both options as I want to upgrade to HD Suite once M100 is Universal Binary compliant in early 2007.

If anyone can help us, that would be great.

best place to read about compatibility is the media 100 web site. although they cannot test every vendor’s Configurations, the compatible configurations guide is a help.

also, so is the media 100 website itself a reasonable guide, but i belive it should have greater detail overall.

you will require new a media 100 system if you change to mac pro.

i have 8.2.2 on a dual 2Ghz and will have to buy a new system as i want to go to intel computer as well. i am opting for hd suite which is based on the aja kona 3 card. i will however wait for the media 100 to be universal binary before making my purchase.

you can upgrade to a sd only media 100 on the mac pro if you wish but again you will require a new system.

you will need to keep your current system intact, especially if it works properly and buy yourself a second system or sell your current system to offset the cost of a new one.

The BR-HD50E operation manual specifically states that the component outputs analogue HD and SD signals. Further, you can select 50Hz or 60Hz output via the menu. RS 422 control stability inconclusive, however there are a number of settings for the 422 via menu setup. This may help or eliminate the lockup problems you may be encountering.

I agree, I have had my fair share of drive failures over the 12+ years I have been editing on Macs wih HDDs. I had to redigitise on new drives but with some drives I was able to recover the data.

I do not really concern myself with drive failures and get on with the job. Maybe it;s not the best way to operate but I just sort out any issues that arise.

I am looking at the SATA setup from a HD capability viewpoint and not from redundancy aspect. I have operated my SD editing in this way.

I will, however look at the fc option in the new year and seriously consider it as well.

What fc setup do you have?

from what i have read, the Caldigit seems to be just right for my proposed move to HDCAM. Your feedback goes a long way in helping me make a truly sound decision.

I will eventually get hold of a set of Caldigit drives and test them out or at least see them demonstrated prior to committing but i have no doubt they will perform flawlessly.

Thanks Rufus for your recommendation concerning card placement. i had read other suggetions that concur with yours on this and other forums.

one mac reseller tells me to go with fibre channel as it will do 4Gb/sec and the SATA does 3. i am aware of this but i do not think fc is necessary any longer. i don’t think the company he works for have the satasvto sell just yet so he is ‘forece
‘ to push what they have.

as my upgrade (from sd to hd/sd) purchas isn’t for at least 3 months, no doubt more savvy operators will be using Caldigit or similar systems so more user feedback will be the real world test.

Wow, I agree, 12 hours!!!
If the “only” way is upload to an FTP server, maybe break the program up into shorter segments for easier uploading. Very frustrating if something happens during a 12hr program upload.

Double check to ensure that your ISP does not limit or charge you extra for over uploading. Most don’t charge at all for uploads but it pays to check.

Otherwise I agree with Floh re sending the set of DVDs to your client as an alternative.
