Thanks, Rafael, I am doing that now.
But to use the anamorphic codec doesn’t that presume that it was shot anamorphically to begin with?
If there was no special lens shouldn’t it be standard and not anamorphic?

The footage was shot in France and passed along to me. The AG-HVX200A plays it back fine. The cassettes are the DVCAM 40 (PDVM-40N) with a memory chip.
Shot on a Sony camera rented in France that, I am told, had several different schemas available for recording footage. My AG-HVX200A was purchased in Vienna, Austria, so the PAL format is offered and the MacBook Pro I have with Final Cut Studio was also installed with the Final Cut Studio that is installed in Germany and Austria.
The list of formats on the “Easy Set Up” is slightly different than what shows up on the USA Final Cut Studio.
But, one thing for sure, there is no simple import option that says “DVCAM”. So, I am just trying to get the closest codec to match whatEVER was encoded on the Sony camera.
I can select a number of different options in Final Cut that allow me to playback and control the AG-HVX200A but I really want to match the specs of the video and audio with the proper codec as closely as possible so that I don’t get anything “funky” showing up later. For instance, some of the Final Cut codecs offer 23.98 frames per second, 24, and 25, all PAL, which are the probably original choices the operator had in the French camera rental Sony.
I keep trying to record with the QuickTime player but I cannot get it to select the AG-HVX200A, even though I save the preferences and even restart QT with those preferences as default. It keeps defaulting to the built-in MacPro camera. So, I can’t get a recording started with QT using the native device setting and all that jazz.
So, any suggestions on the likely to be closest Final Cut Codec capture codec? On my Final Cut trials I can control the camera from Final Cut but when I click “Capture NOW” it keeps playing the footage but does not record it.

Thanks NICK and RAFAEL!

Rafael,
Thanks for the advice! I just checked around with Google but I can’t really see the exact download location for this.
Is this another name for Quicktime Pro?
I see utilities referred to by the name you used that are about recording SCREEN movements, etc….
What is the direct source for this, if you know offhand?

Yes, Tom, the sequence explanation probably fits my problem.
So apparently I was using the sequence version rather than the .mov clip. This was manufactured from a stills folder using an FxFactory plugin….MultiSwoop. So, it is a several minute “slide show” with simulated 3d movement even though it is composed from a folder of stills.
I did make an .mov of this sequence but didn’t see the specific extension in the browser window to tell me that I was working with the sequence. I had thought that rendering it made it editable even as a sequence.
I was viewing this in the Viewer window and marking In and Out and then selecting the Make a Subclip icon which then deposited a subclip in my bin. But I was confused that the subclip didn’t respond to the in and out points.
Thanks for your response, Tom, and giving me a CLUE!

Ahhh…thanks David.
I was taking “DV” to be a generic reference to the multiplicity of DV encodings formats….
Appreciate that…

August 16, 2008 at 6:14 pm in reply to: Final Cut Pro Studio quits on new install on laptopOkay, so the “local network” Apple refers to is actually THE network…the internet.
But after turning off airport on my iMac in the office and uploading all updates for the new MacBook Pro laptop I started up Final Cut Pro without a problem.
The curious thing is that the Applications folder has a folder marked Final Cut Pro Additional Easy Setups. In the English folder I find the DVCPRO HD 720p50.fcpre file.
Clicking on informs me that Apple doesn’t know what application would open this up. I have to tell it to show me all applications before it enables Final Cut Pro as a possible application to open up a “Final Cut Pro Setup file”. But, Final Cut Pro doesn’t know what to do with a .fcpre file!
I can not open up what are marked as Final Cut Pro Easy setup files with Final Cut Pro…
When I also try selecting a .fcpre file from the Files Open in Final Cut Pro Choose command I get an unknown file type.
Any codec setup I try in these folders fails to be recognized as a known file type.

August 16, 2008 at 3:50 pm in reply to: Final Cut Pro Studio quits on new install on laptopHi David,
Thanks for taking the time to respond.
I was looking forward to installing all the updates until the application quit.
I am somewhat new to Mac. How does this “network” get detected?
I don’t have sharing configured on either machine to share anything. We have two iMac desktops sitting in this office and we don’t even share with each other. I can’t even send a print job through the network to the printer on my partner’s machine.
And right now I am working on a Final cut project on the iMac desktop.
So what is the default “sharing” going on with these machines that the laptop is seeing the open final cut pro project running on the desktop? Since we are both accessing the same Netgear wireless modem for internet access are the Macs now “seeing” and communicating with each other on a “network” even though we have all sharing switched off?
Thanks!

Walter…you da man!
Thanks for your response! It gives me confidence to go and quite worrying about this issue.
By the way, I have been watching your Tutorials for the past week and already had your very helpful realtime sequences tutorial bookmarked for quick reference.
Gracias!
