Here’s another way to select a clip in the timeline, without changing the playheads position (and with the skimmer active).

Click and hold on an empty area of the timeline above or below the clip you want to select, drag the selection box over the clip, done. Now you can click and drag the selected clip to a new position, trim the ends, apply the default transition etc. My favorite part is that you can do this during playback.

I especially like trimming the end of a clip during playback, while watching the audio waveforms to anticipate where the cut will be before the playhead gets there. Fast and fun!

Not so much the other way around, e.g. trimming the start of a clip when the playhead is past the edit point. Because when the magnetic timeline ripples, the playhead keeps it’s position relative to the timeline, NOT relative to the position it was in the clip, not the behavior I expect in this “paradigm”. So playback “jumps” or “skips” instead of continuing to play smoothly, thus ruining a part of the pleasure that cutting in X could, should and hopefully will be.

FCP X and I have a serious love/hate relationship at the moment, really looking forward to the next update (man I hope it’s an “encouraging” update)!

I found that just zooming in or out (cmd +/-) once or twice, click to move the play head, then going back seems fix it.

Can you ask the people at the darker rinks to turn up the lights? Try setting the auto gain correction to a lower number, or avoiding full auto mode

I don’t have the FMU but I think you just remove it from the camera and plug it’s mini USB into the computer. Always copy the “private” folder (if it’s the same as the SD cards) to a new folder on your computer. Name that new folder to describe what the footage is. Eject the FMU/SD card before opening L&T.

I like to keep all my avchd folders on a separate, dedicated HDD, then L&T Prores to my backed-up RAID for editing. Those folders don’t need to be there cluttering my main drives and taking up space.

Also, I avoid using the cameras built in USB to copy media files, just to stay away from the unnecessary risk of unplug/power-off during the file transfer.

You could probably save a few hundred dollars if you buy and install the RAM yourself. With the money saved you might be able to squeeze a $550 Matrox MXO2 Mini (or maybe find a used one cheaper) into the budget and monitor with any HDMI TV. If you deliver h.264 frequently, the extra $500 for the MAX version is worth it. If you need SDI I/O the MXO2 LE is great, I couldn’t live without mine, but that is yet another $500 increase.

I’m not sure about your question, if it is confusing I suggest importing one camera at a time. Eject every camera archive that shows up in L&T then bring just camera 1 back in. Set up the name/info as necessary and transfer. Eject the archive when finished, then repeat for camera 2.

Just to note. In the recommended install procedure for having both FCS 3 and FCPX on the same drive running on Lion, after install and all updates, you should open Motion 4 before any other App. If this is due to some conflict with Lion and FCS 3, it couldn’t hurt to open Motion 4 first. Even if you are not installing FCPX at all. Just a thought.

I’ve had a few similar experiences at the Apple store. Most notable was with my iPhone.

When I bought the phone (new contract at AT&T), the protective case I wanted wouldn’t be in stock for a few days. So I figured I would just be really careful with it until then. The day I went to pickup the case I got a pretty bad scratch right in the middle of the screen (I honestly don’t know how it happened). I went to the Apple store and talked to the guy at the front door about the scratch. He then set me up to talk with a Genius. When it was my turn, I showed the lady and explained the situation. She opened up a new iPhone and traded me, NO COST (after making it clear that I have to be more careful with this one)! They certainly achieved another extremely happy customer.

Whether or not the Genius looked up my name and saw that I had spent ~8K in that store over the last couple years, I don’t know…

The over-all service I’ve received since my first Apple product purchase in 2008 (Mac Pro) has been exceptional. I think this treatment inspires some level of “Loyalty”. I’m really big on customer service and am willing to pay a bit more to buy from the company that gives it. So, provided that they continue this standard of customer service (although I don’t expect the free replacements to continue) and their products continue to fit the needs of my business, they have earned a customer for life… We’ll see.
