I use external SATAII drive docks and then use a drive for each project and keep all the files on the drive. When the project is done I can put it on the shelf OR hand it off to the client.

no. however. if you convert the files to DVCPRO HD (and get Raylight’s decoder for the PC side) you can use the same files in both programs.

Sort of. FCP(apple) “wraps” the HDV in Quicktime as it is imported via firewire. In the PC world we get the native HDV stream to work with. Apple has chosen NOT to release the thing that would allow a PC to see the HDV wrapped up in QT and to my knowledge no third party has done it either.

Adobe CS4 DOES read XMP files exported from FCP and does link to the video – I’ve done it and it is wonderful. It probably even links to the HDV files – but of course you can’t see them wrapped up in QT as they are so what’s the point? I finally broke down and bought Raylight’s Codecs to playback (and encode) DVCPRo HD. This is the best transfer format between PC an Mac for us lower-end folks who can’t deal with uncompressed 10-bit blah blah blah.

The HDV QT Codec does not exist for the PC.

Isn’t PPro supposed to have AAC export?

Well, first of all, PPro can’t tolerate large projects. I’ve had medium sized projects (15 hours of source video and some other stuff) and the projects take literally 20 minutes to load. So the first thing I would do is find a way to keep the video files separated into smaller projects – if possible. It will be worth the extra effort to keep it a bunch of small projects.

Secondly, obviously XDCAM will not play off of USB drive. I have SATAII drives that just managed them at draft quality.

Third – I don’t know about sharing the footage on two systems – you might be better off with some duplication. I have my systems set up with External SATA Hard Drive Docs. If I need to move the project, I can pop the drive and move it. The Media Preferences matter here – I target the files to the same drive but the database to the c: drive. When a project is moved, it has to build a new media cache database but not the audio files or index files – usually. I am on CS4 so the media preferences are likely different in CS3 – can’t remember anymore.

    Otherwise, a fiberchannel network drive…???

The footage is all DVCProHD – using Raylight to decode should have mentioned that…
