I don’t think anyone, including Adobe implicitly, is saying that it can’t be done. As has been pointed out MainConcept has been doing it with mpeg2 and I think their Reference app may do it with shades of h264. However for a commercial app oriented at professional use like PrPro how big is the demand to encode back to AVCHD untouched? Probably not very big at all. I haven’t seen any hordes of users clambering for it. Does Avid, FCP 7 or X, do it? I don’t think so. Egg on on Adobe’s face over this? A rather unjustifiable assertion, don’t you think?

Yes, it’s hilarious…that you think so 🙂

On a more serious note, I’m sure there are ideas in X that are worthwhile that both Adobe and Avid are examining. The magnetic timeline, the single panel interface, are probably not them.

But I don’t think there’s anything in X that Adobe is actually envious of. In fact, short of 64 bits, the Mercury Playback Engine, and CUDA, X may be the best thing that’s ever happened to Premiere Pro. It’s bringing in a wave of professional users that are accustomed to the efficiencies in FCP 7’s interface who will demand PrPro take the steps to measure up.

I tend to believe the nomenclature comes from ‘Event’ Videography:

Joe’s Wedding and its videos and stills = an Event

Your edit of the wedding video = a Project

Your edit of the stills to Lawrence Welk’s champagne music = another Project

Get the idea of what possible inspired the new names? Because, in theory, if not in practice, the event could also be James Cameron’s next opus. Apple apparently sees the range of productions as events. A strange notion to attempt to change the standard nomenclature, but if your intent is to appeal to consumers it makes some sense.

Hmmm…In it’s present form you can’t select the track to analyze which is one of its shortcomings. So with stereo tracks, anyway, both tracks are reduced to mono… It may be that it doesn’t work with more than stereo tracks, the thought being that the content could be so disparate that it wouldn’t make sense. Maybe Todd can say a definitive word on that.

I expect at some point in the future the track(s) will be selectable.

Phil, that may be true for DV which is an intra frame codec ie each frame is a complete whole. But as I tried to explain above it’s not true for your camera AVCHD codecs which are inter frame (Long GOP) and thus there’s no way any NLE can directly pass your cut clips through on export. At the very least the partial GOPs surrounding your edits would need to be rendered. I think MainConcept’s Smart Rendering plugins do that for mpeg2 but you’d have to check with them to see if AVCHD is supported on output.

I’m pretty sure Matrox has not yet implemented timecode out in the SDI stream. It’s something they could and should do…both for monitoring and for Print to Tape without previously striping.

There are issues with remapping the arrow keys. I don’t bother and map my Left Right scroll wheel buttons to Next/Prev edit

BTW if you stop to think about it for long GOP material such as DSLR it’s not possible to pass cuts through without recompression. If the cuts occur anywhere in the middle of the GOP the surrounding frames have to be rendered.

Unprocessed footage cannot go straight through unless it’s uncompressed.

It depends what your end use is but if it’s for later processing your best bet is to render to a high quality codec. If you have FCP on your system then Prores, if not then DnxHD or 10 bit uncompressed if you have the drive space.
