Yes, I didn’t realize that you were discussing ancient pre-history. Wow. I do remember vaguely Premiere 4.2 through dim shards of memory.
As for PPro CS4 it was the last 32 bit version. Memory issues had plagued Premiere for larger projects since its introduction and with CS4 they attempted to portion off separate functions into separate dlls running in their own memory space (in a 64 bit OS). It helped a little but not enough. 5.0 was the watershed 64 bit release though no one outside of Premiere users noticed until Apple did its dirty.

No. For large projects Premiere 4.2 was misery. It became theoretically and practically usable with the 5.0 64 bit re-write and Mercury playback engine.

Let’s not confuse theoretical relevance with real world applicability is my only point. No one today needs to be going more than one or two generations from source. If they do have to go 5 I agree it’s nice to know that Proves is the best option. Otherwise show me the difference in my real working situation to have any meaning for me.

Degradation after 5 generations isn’t any meaningful take away at all. The only meaningful degradation is that after one or two generations. Do that test and there’s something worth considering.

Interesting. But in actual use anyone who would re-compress anything through 5 generations would be a complete moron. More interesting is how they stack up after 1-2 generations – an actual use scenario,

You’re right, Aindreas. Nothing much left here beyond entrenched ideological bleatings, mostly from those who have committed to the Cause. Hey, it may be entertaining for a while but it does get tiring. I too think this forum has pretty much served it’s purpose. The world has moved on. Those using FCPX are happy with it. It does what they need it to do. Good. But this place is now just serving as a platform for persuasion with precious little new being added. It’s becoming one of those dreary rainy day places which purport to offer shelter but after a brief time, being out in the rain seems much more preferable.
The discussion is over. It’s now argument.
