[Craig Seeman] “I’m honestly not sure how Apple competes with this.”

I can’t see it either. This another mind boggling leap from these magnificent freaks.

[David Mathis] “While it is getting there I still prefer to use Final Cut Pro X or Premiere Pro for editing.”

I certainly would agree with the Premiere part of that opinion. It’s an all round better editor than Resolve, though I think the Mercury Playback Engine is starting to show its age. Resolve handles 4k+ media better on playback but on the minus side, try to switch back and forth between complex timelines. Resolve is slow even on my beast of a system. Premiere is almost instant.

Keyframing. Premiere is much better at it. In Resolve you can’t ease in and ease out with positioning splines. Which means digital moves start up instantly and crash to a halt. Totally unacceptable. It also doesn’t do graphical UI keyframes with plugins.

Resolve doesn’t have a render and replace function which means you’re at the mercy of the Render Cache for effects heavy work and the Render Cache doesn’t always persist between starts…something that’s got much better with 15 but is nowhere near consistent. To workaround stubborn non-persistent parts of the timeline you have to hop over to the Deliver page, export, import and place. Premiere makes the job of render and replace, or force render of a recalcitrant part of the timeline, easy.

And Premiere has Media Encoder to offload renders and keep working. Nothing similar with Resolve.

That’s my main complaints so all in all I much prefer Premiere as an NLE. Resolve is getting there but BM’s focus is split between the NLE, Color, DAW, and Compositing modes. It’s gann take a while.

[Steve Connor] “s it ready for primetime as an NLE yet?”

Funny you should ask. Up to this morning I would have answered with a qualified yes.

I’ve been putting together a 10 minute timeline with multi-layered EXRs as VFx shots along with some heavily graded documentary clips. Until now I hadn’t stumbled on anything where there wasn’t a simple workaround, like any NLE that I’ve ever used. However this morning I began a new timeline with the intent of copying and pasting VFx and graded sections of my working timeline. Horrendously, the in-points of many of the pasted clips in the new timeline were off by country miles. Any workaround was painstaking and clip by laborious clip. And this is a bug that is probably systemic and not a simple fix.

So…is Resolve as an NLE ready for primetime? Nope. In my opinion not for anything mission critical. I’d also venture that the Edit module is much farther along than the Fairlight…and the Fairlight is much farther along than the Fusion module. To tell you the truth I was surprised when they released 15 but I guess both the Fairlight and Fusion pages are going to take more than a month or two to get anywhere near release stage, as we normally think of it. But Blackmagic thinks of it differently and is playing a long game where beta and release are blended concepts.

All that said, the Color module is a joy and Edit mostly works, and the integration with Fairlight sometimes brought smiles to my face. So when they do get Resolve running well on all its legs I expect it will be a major player.

Perhaps the notion of Fetishism is appropriate……..just say’n….as they say….

[Joseph Owens] ” There is a reason TB3 is specified. TB2 or slower is not on par with PCIe 16-lane, which is what the eGPU is trying to emulate.”

But seeing as TB3 is 4 lanes it doesn’t do a very good emulation job of a16 lanes interface. This eGPU idea is just to sell a lot of hardware to folks for whom lower powered systems are sufficient.

In Premiere’s Preferences/Playback/ make sure the Decklink is checked on and then you may have to play with its options to get the right “smaller than” or “larger than” setting. Otherwise there will be no signal. It’s kind of ridiculous that Blackmagic have you set that in their driver.

April 15, 2018 at 12:53 pm in reply to: ‘Winning’ NAB vs winning new users

    [Andrew Kimery] “David,
Could you expand more on what you think Grant meant by ‘traditional’ NLE? Did he mean an NLE that was primarily focused on editing while capable of doing other things ‘good enough’ like audio mixing, GFX/VFX, color grading, etc.,?”

Yes, exactly. ‘Good enough’ in those areas is clearly NOT what they’ve been developing. He stressed the idea of creative freedom a lot in the interview and by acquiring and then integrating Fairlight and Fusion they added a lot of deep functionality to the editing process, Meanwhile they’ve built their own editor from scratch…not an easy thing to do these days…and succeeded. Does it have holes and incomplete features? You bet! At their pace of development how could it not? OTOH, compared to FCPX, the next most recent NLE on the block, whose pace of development is comparatively glacial, it’s amazing that it’s now as far along as it is. I would describe it as ‘mature’ and expect that a lot of large films will be giving Resolve 15 a shot in editorial. Will they still send it out for compositing work? Probably less and less, as they’ll do a much of it in Fusion. Same with sound in Fairlight. And likely they’ll stay in Resolve for color.

So, come late Summer, when they’ll likely release 15.0, I expect we’ll see a lot of case studies. I also expect that a lot of new ‘holes’ will show up. The real challenge for Blackmagic will be in a year, if they can resist conforming to expectations and instead of announcing killer new features, just concentrate on making it better as it is. But, then again, what could they possibly add on? 3D modeling? Well, best not to speculate. Nothing much would surprise me at this point.

I have a visual Effects project that was shot on the Ursa Mini Pro 4.6k CDNG at 3:1 compression. No other NLE can presently handle that without transcoding, which was not part of the workflow for various reasons. So the decision was made to edit the VFx sequences in Resolve 14. I found it a capable editor but missing a few features compared to PrPro that required working around. V. 15 seems to be filling in the gap with most, if not all of them. But even in 14 I could do things in the color page with layered EXRs out of Nuke that can’t be done in the Adobe ecosystem, as good as it is.
