In some places, deeper, but with colour, they’re few and far between. And nowhere near the same price point. This is the main reason why with v. 15 I think they will be a major player.

Hmmm there’s a presumption there that if it was turned into a wager I would happily take on. (However it wouldn’t be fair because I’m not only tolerably skillful with colour and sound, I’m also the producer of my films☺) But even assuming that the comment was not directed at me personally, but was a general reflection on the segmentation of the industry, I still think it misses the point that Resolve, because of its price point and incredibly deep tool set, is opening up areas of creativity to editors that have never existed before and there will be many, especially in a new generation, who will happily and skillfully put them to use.

I’ll jump in and disagree. The big difference between Avid DS, and Smoke with Resolve is price point. By seeding a very capable free version and charging $300 for the studio version, Resolve is a total no-brainer and will find it’s way into single person shops as well as the larger facilities by osmosis. The real question is, have they made a capable NLE, a capable color grader etc…and the answer with version 14 was, yes. Absolutely. Version 15 is, at least on paper, is exponentially even more so. T
he mistake being made here is to see it as appealing to separate groups of user skill sets. I personally don’t see it that way. I’m interested in it as an NLE WITH color grading, nodal compositing, and sound capabilities. As I wade deeper into the colour and nodal compositing pages, their capabilities merge into my own tool set and I’m delighted by the extra creative possibilities they bring. Yes, I’ll still take my Resolve project to a Resolve colorist but it will be to expand the color work that I’ve already laid down. Same with the sound mix.
Grant Petty’s interview on Redshark is very revealing of their philosophy. At one point he says “We believe the traditional NLE is dead.” As young people integrate the full Resolve toolset into their skills, I think he may prove to be right. At the very least, with version 15 they’re storming the gates of the traditional NLE, if not the entire realm(s) of post production.

Let’s not forget that Prores raw is an acquisition codec and BM have their own compressed DNG acquisition codec that’s bitwise (14 vs 12) superior to Prores Raw, as does every other high and mid range camera manufacturer. But yeah I see them all supporting it at some point because it’ll probably be optimized for FCPX. As far as the new 4k Pocket Cinema camera, probably down the line but their CDNG codec is likely better and more attractive to them because it’s free. It’ll make it into the BMPCC and Resolve (and PrPro) when the cameras start supporting it and if it’s performance as an editing codec is demonstrated on non-Apple boxes to be very good.

One of the worst things about Win 10 is that by default it will happily go about updating your system without telling you. You can temporarily shut that off if you delve into settings but the Spring and Fall Creator’s update cause lots of havoc with drivers for some hardware. Sounds like that may have happened with you. OTOH hardware components have been known to age and fail. When things go South like that it can happen on any system and OS. It’s just life in the wonderful world of complex machines.

I use 7 on my Office machine and 10 Pro on the Fastwalker (specs above). I find 10 Pro to be totally stable as long as I keep bios, drivers, apps, and OS upgrades up to date. Sometimes small things break with a major update but it’s followed by an update with the driver or app that fixes it. This does mean paying attention and keeping everything up to date. Most of the problems people experience with the stability any NLE are caused by not keeping things, especially hardware, drivers current.

The thread is about the not-to-be-released-until-2019 Mac Pro. So pointing out what’s available today as a more powerful machine than the iMac Pro is appropriate, no?
Apple could put out an expandable machine tomorrow based on my specs for less money( well, it’s Apple so it would never be less money). The point is that they’ve decided in their preternatural wisdom, that the majority of Mac power users will wait another year or more. Not so astonishingly, they’re probably right.

Well, to use the impoverished car analogy, it’s certainly not about a Fiesta vs a BMW going to visit your grandmother. It’s about going cross country – off road – and whether your car can get you there at all. Appropriate tools for appropriate work.

Worry not, gentle Steve. I have a Mac Book Pro and I could run it on that if I had a desire or need to.
Unlike many of the defenders of the faith here, who think I should want or need to run FCPX if only my eyes would open to it’s glory, alas, my eyes just glazed over. It’s just not my taste. May they be happy in their bliss, but mine is found elsewhere so I don’t come here much and when I do I tend to skip over the proselytechniks. I have friends who use it and are happy with it but their needs are much less demanding than mine and they don’t feel any need to tell me that I’m missing something or that I could be doing what I’m doing on lower powered Apple hardware.
