This ultimately depends on your workflow (whether you are editing Quicktime based files or Video for Windows based). If you’re working with QT, you can export as uncompressed (HUGE file) with an alpha channel. Or you can export through the Animation codec (with an alpha channel). If you have a Windows workflow, you can export as an AVI (again with alpha channel). There are other options but not knowing the rest of your story (computer platform and specs, intended use, etc.) I feel these to be the most suitable to start with.
The key is that you need to export RGB+Alpha, Millions of Colors+ in the output module section of AE.

January 2, 2006 at 4:41 pm in reply to: Problems with After Effects Audio while renderingThat’s strange. I would try searching the forums at Adobe. Also, you may want to try separating the audio from the video and importing it into AE by itself.

December 30, 2005 at 8:09 pm in reply to: Trouble exporting QT from Avid Express 4.3 for use in DVD Studio Pro 2.0You should see if DVD Studio can accept a QT Reference file instead of the actual rendered mov. I don’t operate on a Mac so I’m not familiar with DVD Studio. Make sure the sequence or clip you want to export is highlighted (and has focus) in the Avid bin. The Avid’s menus are very “context sensitive” and change quite drastically based on which window or file has focus/highlight.
Note: I drive an Avid Adrenaline but based on I think the info should be much the same.

Late reply as usual… I am doing this with no problems. I too use an Nvidia card. But I have 2 LCD panels, so I had to add a second video card to the computer. One handles an LCD panel and the Sony PVM 1940 monitor. If Media Player and QuickTime play back on the video monitor as mine does, I’m not sure what the problem with Premiere is. Just wanted to let you know it can work without buying external gear or playing out through your camera or deck.

Windows XP builtin backup (a Veritas product, I think) has worked well for me. Keep your work in a few well-placed folders. Do a full backup once a week and incrementals once or twice more per week.

August 16, 2005 at 4:57 pm in reply to: Importing transparent feathered Photoshop filesI’ve had best results in PS and After Effects by exporting over checkerboard. Don’t create your own alpha channel in Photoshop, especially with PNG, as the 24 bit version contains its own alpha channel. I think the graphic imorts for Avid leave something to be desired anyway, but I have discovered it would rather handle the alpha itself, rather than you creating one in PS.

July 5, 2005 at 5:44 pm in reply to: how to get profesional-video look with premiere?“… so the final result is likely a profesional-look edited video. i mean, the picture quality.”
Bayu, the “picture quality” is largely determined by the DP/camera person’s choices in lighting, exposure, framing, etc. during production. You seemed to have already surmised this. Your challenge as a fledgling editor is to learn the art/science of color correction, legal levels, pacing, and shot selection to carry out your editorial intent. I happen to work at a company where I get to “do it all” from script revisions and shooting, to graphics, editing and authoring. The best thing to do for your own sanity is to separate the jobs as much as possible and take control of only what you have in your power to change. If the raw footage you’re working with looks “unprofessional” (whatever that is) and is unsalvageable in post, make sure you know how to explain the problem to your employer and/or camera crew. Crap In = Crap Out, or something like that 🙂

AFAIK, if you create a new profile it will have default settings. But You can also set the font Avid uses in its various windows by making a window active and going to Edit–>Set Font (Adrenaline HD). If it’s a font particular to Avid you’re looking for, the best thing to do may be reinstall the Avid app.

Jim, we’ve had similar problems with the Avid QT Reference movie to Sorenson workflow. Stuttery, fielded looking video. There is a problem with either Avid’s QT Ref Mov or Sorenson or both; we have an elevated open case file with Avid about this problem. But we haven’t gotten any real responses about it. I author with Encore on my Adrenaline box. The only consistent workflow has been to print the final edit to tape, reload it into Adrenaline, and then use the reference movie from that sequence.
