The last person might have hopelessly scratched the surface of one or more of the disks. You can see the worst scratches with a magnifier but DVD is so tight you could have undetectable damage in just the wrong spot.
Yes, try to acquire replacement disks.

Is it just the 1800? do other 422 devices work? What about other FW video inputs?
What’s the connection between the 1800 and the Mac (I don’t know anything about Aja products or how they control decks).

That’s because the default setting for the Link button is ON. You must have inadvertently hit the button or initiated the keybard shorty.

But, I’d like to welcome you to the family and tell you we all feel your pain. I’m not condescending. If you’re coming from a deeply ingrained platform like Avid, you’re going to be extremely frustrated by many aspects of FCP. Coming from Windows, you’re going to have emotional conflicts with Tiger.
FCP doesn’t work like Avid and you can’t talk to it in the same way. “Ripple delete” probably doesn’t even mean the same thing in both apps. I never use ripple delete because the results are so bizarrely unpredictable. AutoSelect gets involved (or gets in the way, I simply loathe autoselect and would like to see the bozos who implemented it slooowwlly… but I digress) Autoselect controls all of your timeline decisions made with keystrokes instead of mouse commands.

You’re obviously a seasoned editor and I think you’re going to enjoy FCP in a few more months but, if you don’t mind me saying so, you appear to have bitten off a project that demands too much of your limited FCP/Tiger knowledge. Do you have some FCP or Apple buddies you can call? Get some fancy imported bubbly waters and cheeses and invite them over to help you with your TIger issues. Go buy Andy Inhatko’s ultra cool Tiger book (can’t miss it on the shelves at Borders, bright silver cover). Invest five or ten hours of slogging through those silly FCP tutorials. Elementary, yes, but all kinds of light bulbs will go on for you. Go buy one of the “FCP for Avid Users” books.

Let me add…
Google Closed Captioning and you will find several hours of fascinating reading. Your clients may or may not understand the differences between providing ADA compliance for viewer-activated captioning on home televisions and the more sophisticated subtitling systems built into DVD players. It’s all quite confusing. And there are several different competing standards.

I’ll echo the others’ advice: Hire it done. Subtitling and captioning is a remarkable pain in the ass without dedicated hardware and a solid background in the tools.

You don’t say which OS you’re on, did you? I imagine the new iMacs are running Tiger and that’s probably the issue. FCP4+ and Tiger did not get along well. I have no clue why not but most of the

You kids. Back when AE was CoSA, it took a weekend to render one effect on a ten second layer. I have no sympathy.

FCP is totally CPU-based. There is no way for the CPU to handle two streams and process them into a composite. Future versions of FCP may have hooks into graphics processors, the current rev does not. You can downgrade your renders to 50% and they complete in 1/4 the time. That’s plenty of resolution for previewing and coarse timing. If it’s not, you’ve got to learn to work differently or you will need more expensive toys.
Your decision to go to a proprietary format will be economic. Beyond that, there are endless hassles with drives and updates to those silly boxes and cards. Researching the reviews for them is easy, it just takes a few weeks to figure it all out. You can lurk on all of those forms here but please don’t start asking, “Which is best?” That’s up to you and your budget and your frustration level. Waiting for renders in DV may be chump change when it comes to maintaining proprietary boxes.
Yes, you will see substantial differences between 8- and 10-bit video but only if the subject matter can benefit and only if you are playing your movies on systems that can show them well. If you need 10-bit quality in AE, you already know about it. If you don’t, then you don’t need it.
