What if you edit the clip natively (in 720P DVCPRO HD).

    Apply the effects, moves ,etc.

    THEN

change the sequence setting to 10 bit uncompressed and render or copy paste it into a new 10 bit UC sequence.

the 235 is an NTSC peak white value, so that seems very strange. DVCPRO HD from varicam has problems with solid colors. It is the single number one thing that breaks the codec down. I have seen it in several different instances.

Maybe you can edit natively and then just cpconvert and render the final, it might be simpler.

  • I did this with three screens once.

Basically, I had all three playing in the timeline (at reduced sizes so I could see them all the time) and then I would cut each track as need be. This was a syncro cut, each image had to change on the same frame on all three monitors.

We screened rough cuts with all three playin on one screen and then finished each layer full screen on three separate timelines.

THey then syncro played back the three machines.

This all comes back to the inferior FCP Media Manager and the “not so striaght ahead” approach to reconenecting media files in FCP. The program still gets ithcy if it doesn’t see the media it was originally given.

This has been a great thread.

I wonder what the plans are with the Silicon Color Purchase. I wonder if this will become:
    1. An add on Color Corrector to FCP,
    2. Stand alone APPLE app
    3. A Bundle with FC EXTREME.

It’s hard to say, but it looks like Apple is lining FCP up against the most high end work stations with Shake, Motion and now his powerfull CC tool.

I like the ONE RENDER, no import export approach to a plug in based module, but Final Touch could be a serious stand alone app when it is fully intgrated (like if they built conforming and recapturing right in to the app).

The big drag is all of this duplicated media. It would be nice to see a non destructive approach to color correction as they do with Audio in soundtrack, just stacking layers and effects in history and no need for renders. (I know that it means making everything Real Time, but it is just an awful fact that you have to capture a terabyte, then render a terabyte to output a show. It doubles all of the storage requirements.

Sure, storage is cheap, but time is more valuable and if the machines could push out these TIMELINES in realtime instead of just the shot for shot GPU appraoch, it would be a much more effiecient appraoch.

November 16, 2006 at 2:51 pm in reply to: From Avid to FCP

It has to do with the QT wrapper it put son the file and the relationship to the MOB file that AVID creates when teh media is captured. The file is basically photo -jpeg compression (which to me is no longer a nessesary compression since the DV codecs and massive hard drive space came on the scene)

This is a huge advantage in AVID as the media management is very tight. SO tight that once the media is in AVID you need to export new media to work with it in AE for example, whereas in FCP at it’s QT based file structure you can just go to the root hard drive and work with it from there.

  • Are you seeing this interlacing on your broadcast monitor?

You realize that the internal FCP monitor is a 1 field preview, right? It is no way if assessing video as it is to be displayed for playback.

Have you actually rendered out a test or are you just seeing this in the compressor preview wndow?(normal)

  • Jason,

Open one of these movies with QT player.

in the get movie info dialog box you will see the file size, data rae, compressor and other vital data on the files.

When you have established the file type then maybe you can create a sequence setting to match that in FCP.

More info needed here for sure, before anyone can really help you.

It sounds like this is coming from imovie, not fcp.

    Walt,

I am so sorry to hear that Final Touch is not reliable enough to run in your current workflow. I thought you really liked that product. I love the concept of the product and that it uses the Graphic card GPU to work in Real Time.

It’s too bad that the product is in lala land right now, but I guess it’s going to be another core technology in the studio.

By then we won’t even be able to use third party hard drives with FCP.
