This biggest problem you will face is that Final Cut Pro ( for Professional) does not send more than the first frame of timecode information from the timeline. I am not sure why this decision was made by the Final Cut Pro team, but timecode has never been a great friend to FCP.
i would suggest you use a QT movie from FCP in the audio program that you are using. I am assuming that you want to run High rez picture from your timeline while composing in logic. You might best use a DVCPRO reference movie for decent image quality.
I think there are some VTR emulators out there, but I am not sure they would be the best solution.

I did not mean to suggest that, please do not take offence. I think this is a fantastic and very useful thread. It might belong in the cow’s business practices thread, but none the less, it is a very worthy topic and I learned a lot reading this thread.
I agree that giving is the crux of receiving and it does pay to have a component of your business that helps people.

You could watch the secret and figure out how the law of attraction is playing out for you.Seriously.
You either give or you don’t. It’s very black and white. When you do a non profit for less than your rate is must have something to do with your feeling toward the organization. Shift your thinking from “what am I getting” to “what am I giving” and you might feel a lot better about these jobs. Every once and a while you get the chance to help somebody out. Don’t you think it comes back to you in the form of all of those jobs you get where you did a lot less work for really good money.
You always have to look at that too. We’ve all had jobs like that. So, if it is going to irk you then that should tell you not to take the job in the first place.
Life is short, time in edit rooms is much longer if you are not enjoying yourself.

Try using QT or another program to convert the movie into a format like DV. then import that file and cut it down inside FCE

I have had excellent results with media manager with large and small projects, but it all does come down to how the material was treated at stage one. also. to avoid issues of freeze frames and such the best thing to do is drag a freeze frame into a folder called freezed frames, reload that media and cut it back in so that there is a referenceable clip for FCP.
By and large the Media “mangler” has been a language issue. COming from Avid line words like offline and recompress can be taken to mean completely different things. I think that they can not call it consolidate or decompress in FCP because of patent issues probably.

I took a look at that Hardware solution posted in this thread. The eyelight. If that passes BBC spec then you can bet it is one fantastic legalizer. This might be the solution to saving you a tone of time. How about this for a time saver.
Run the downconverted HD right into the legalizer and the legalizer out to the D-beta deck.
That will save you the laptop pass, hard drive space and further rendering time.
They have a product designed especially for a single user/workstation application. To me that is the best way to save time and money. Keep it in real time.

Probably the best YUV to RGB codec, which retains nice color fidelity is the SHEER Video codec (look for my article on this in next months COW magazine) You will also like that it is one fifth the size of NONE, that it is cross platform and that it plugs in as a regular QT codec.

I agree with you, the Broacast safe can be used very effectively under the circumstances you have described. If it is thought of as a pixel cleaner, then it does the job at the last stage quite wel.
Now we just have to figure out how to help msacci.
M. I think the best thing you could do is apply the safe at the end of the process and do the final render. You could also use Joe’s Filters. He has a limiter that limits based on the blacks and chroma. But fundamentally the fact remains that HD and SD are two different spces that require two different passes.
The only real solution I see is 24P universal mastering and then having a post house do the downconverts from an F-500 deck to what ever you need. They might have the high end hardware that will clip the signal where you want it and do the hue conversion, etc on the fly.
