    Ummm, strange one this.
It might be worth reformatting you HD on the camera, or resetting the camera to factory settings, just incase you’ve changed something by accident. But to be honest I think you might need to get the camera looked at by a repair guy.
I’m so sorry to hear you lost the footage, but by the sound of it you had a great time!!
Let us know how you get on.

    Hello Paul,

I have indeed noticed that quite a few people are currently having issues with some of the early HD-100’s, but I can honestly say that i’ve had very few issues with my HD-100.
I’ve used my camera in some pretty rank locations, but the camera just keeps running. To date I’ve shot well over 200 hours of footage on it, and its still going strong……maybe I’m just lucky!!
When purchasing any hire equipment you have to make sure you check everything, and then check it again!!
The sad fact is…..a small percentage of people who hire kit treat it very badly indeed.
The drum hours are critical……..getting the heads replaced is not a cheap repair!!

If it’s any help, I’ve been using ‘ffmpegx’ to convert my .tod files, and it seems to work pretty well.
Not the ideal workflow, but hey, the quality is pretty good!!

  • I was lucky enough to be able to borrow a PL adaptor, and a set of primes……I was blown away by the results, so much so that I went out and bought one!!
All I’ve got to do now is raise $40,000 for a second hand set of primes !!!
The Cooke primes I used were superb, and proved what can be achieved with a relatively inexpensive set-up.
I’m not too sure about the availability of the adaptor, because when i bought mine they were very thin on the ground, and difficult to find.

May 5, 2008 at 7:52 pm in reply to: BR-HD50 Dropped Frames with DVCam

Sorry, I was having a blonde moment!!!
The BR-HD50 will indeed playback DVCAM. The license I spoke about refers to JVC wanting to include the ability to record in DVCAM format…….I’VE HAD A LONG WEEK……sorry!!

The problem you described could be as a result of system speed. I have heard of similar issue connected to system speed.

    Sorry for the confusion!!

Correct me if I’m wrong………but the HD50 will only play Mini-DV, and HDV tapes.
If I recall Sony demanded a large sum of cash from JVC for a license to enable the HD-50 to be able to handle DVCAM tapes……JVC declined the offer!!

April 29, 2008 at 10:00 pm in reply to: timecode + picture lost on rushes

    Hello Hugh,

I really hate to say this, but it does appear that your tapes might be damaged.
The fact that the tapes played back during the shoot, on the surface seems like good news, but the tapes could have been damaged by whatever caused the head cleaning warning to appear.
As you’ve tried the tapes on a deck, and you have severe issues with playback things don’t look good I’m sorry to say.
Have you tried to run a tape through the first cam, to see if you are able to play the footage on the deck? It might be worth doing.
Also, have the tapes been exposed to a magnetic field by any chance? strong magnetic fields would cause the same picture break-up, etc…….just a thought.
If it is at all possible I would shoot the footage again, rather than try and save footage that you have already shot.
Hope the above has been of some help.

    Regards & best wishes

    Hello Peter,

I think you overloaded the tap dude. After you replaced the fuse, did you try just using the light on it’s own? if you did, was everything OK, ie: no further blown fuses?
