  • [Khashyar Darvich] “Could this be an issue of recalibrating the Replicator press, even though our check disks do work on stand-alone DVD players, just not on computers?”

Not likely. I would expect a replicated disc that not quite up to spec to have problems on a wide spectrum of players – both computer and stand-alone.

You have checked the sample disc on several stand-alone players? Run it through as many machines as you can find just to be sure.

  • Khashyar,

I wanted to know if the Mac mounted the disc because I have read of a situation (very rare and not related to Scenarist) where disc permissions get interpreted by OSx such that the disc is not allowed to mount. That’s not your problem.

I will ask the guy who runs our glass mastering laser if he has any ideas what could be going on.

At the start of this thread you said, “The Replicator’s glass master “Stamper” reports back is a DLT fails for some reason, but they were able to play the DLTs on their system.” This is troubling. If they had trouble reading the DLT then I would be nervous that the data on the disc is corrupt. Sometimes the DVD player “dirty disc’ code you are seeing is due to corrupt data.

[Khashyar Darvich] “My last step would be to ask our DVD Author to output NEW DLTs”
With Scenarist it is possible to output what Sonic calls a PlantDirect image. This “image” is the set of files that get written to a DLT saved to a hard drive. Check with your replicator but most likely they can use these files by reading them from a DVD-R. This is much faster and cheaper than writing DLT tapes.

  • [Khashyar Darvich] “the one Mac at the DVD Author’s office that would NOT play the Replicator’s check disk, is a G5, just like my G5 that would not play the Replicator’s check DVDs.”

When you say “won’t play” do you mean that the disc won’t even mount on the Mac desktop or start the DVD player? Or does it start the player but not play the disc?

  • [Khashyar Darvich] “there should be a CSS option to 1) allow for playing on a computer (but no copying), and 2) disable playing on a computer (as well as no copying).

My DVD Author is using Scenarist 3.0 or 3.1… Has anyone heard of these CSS options for Scenarist or any other DVD Authoring software?”

We have both 3.0 and 3.1 and I don’t believe there is any such setting.
If there is it is well hidden. I’ve never seen it and I just looked again to be sure.

[Todd Terry] “believe my editor tried exporting as a Quicktime Animation, but still had very poor results.”

    Todd,

The poor quality results might be due to a QuickTime player setting and not due to the file.

    Try this:
With the file open in QuickTime Player…
Choose “Show Movie Properties” from the Window menu items. This will open the Properties dialog box.
    Select the Video Track.
    Select the Visual Settings tab
Make sure the High Quality check box option is checked.

You can save the file with this new option set and it will always open that way. The interesting thing is that this only changes the way the QuickTime player displays it. If you bring the file into After Effect for instance it will look exactly the same no matter how this option is set and saved in the file.

    Hope this helps.

    Clint,

Given a good i/o card Pr works great for SDI capture. Since you’re familiar with Matrox already looking at the Axio LE might make sense.

As Jeff said you will get project setting presets specific to the card when you install the card’s software.

[Clint Milner] “Am I correct in thinking that Digibeta is still standard def and that capturing using Firewire and DV is reasonable?”

Personally I would be upset to know that my Digibeta master was being stepped down to DV format prior to encoding for DVD. My expectation would be that the tape was either going straight from the deck to mpeg2 or was captured as an uncompressed file prior to encoding as mpeg2.

Taiyo Yuden is the best I have found. Second place is Verbatim.

    Last place goes to Memorex.

The programs you mention have been discontinued for a good reason. None of them ever worked reliably.

DVD Studio Pro has a solution called @Access – It doesn’t work very well either.

My answer to clients that ask for this feature is to tell them (in a nice way)”No, it cannot be done”.

March 5, 2009 at 5:56 pm in reply to: Help needed with GOP settings

    Kenny,

I tried experimenting with the 422 profile and cannot make a usable file either. All settings variations I had time to try produced the same blocky output. My conclusion is that AME cannot do it.

I have a copy of Procoder 2 that created a good looking file from an avi input. There is a 422P profile available but it will not allow a bitrate of 50Mbps at the Main Level. It will if at High Level. Maybe the newer version of Procoder is different and allows higher bitrates with 422P:ML.

Seems that you might have to find a different encoding solution for this one. I’ll be curious to hear about your solution.
