Thank you very much for your help, Stacy: I shall try this.

  • Hi Shawn: I’m not sure I can do more than offer dumb thoughts like getting the very latest drivers for your hardware, particularly the graphics card, which on the face of it looks to be the guilty party.

  • I have a similar setup to yours and my machine struggles to cope with previewing HD formats unless I drop monitoring down to Draft or Preview. Add in 3D and things really start to hit the fan.

There seems to be just too much data for the program to handle on even a moderately powerful PC. It appears that the only crucial element in the system which will help is raw CPU power as GPU acceleration appears currently to be aimed at certain transitions and effects rather than viewing what you’re editing.

Solutions seem to involve swapping out HD for SD footage for editing perhaps using VAAST’s Gearshift program or Cineform.

I took a look at Media Composer 6 with this issue in mind because it seemed to shuttle HD well but as soon as your begin to add in FX or extra tracks it too starts to slow down.

We may have to wait for the next generation of supercomputer..

    Hi Ian,

Thanks very much for that,- layout problem sorted!

Now all I’ve got to do is find that missing dialogue box!

Just in case anyone else wants to use Avid with four monitors, it can be done, with windowing saved and with the titler opening properly, BUT.. you have to set up your monitors as if the top one were the fourth in a horizontal row and with monitor one as primary.

Hi Ed, thanks very much for your help: I’ve experimented with the system monitor settings as suggested in the post to which you directed me. The problem seems to be that Avid cannot deal with a monitor arrangement where one is above the others: it can only work horizontally.

If the top monitor is primary everything works (apart from titling) but the window layout is lost on re-start. If the Left or Centre monitor is primary the layout is not lost but Avid will not allow the top monitor to be selected for Full Screen use. If the right is primary Avid’s Settings window will not open, so I can’t attempt to use my top monitor full screen.

If the Top monitor is configured as the extreme left monitor (i.e., as if it were not on top, but to the left of the existing left monitor, if you follow me) – I can use the full width of the three screens and the top monitor for full screen AND the titler works, BUT the window layout is not saved correctly.

Not ideal, because it’s counter-intuitive to move left to access an upper screen – but a useful workaround, so thank you again!

Hi Matt: thank you for your interesting experience and views. I shall look out for the cursor issue you describe and your other comments certainly give pause for thought.

Regarding your queries,- I don’t much like the idea of a swap-out process (VAAST’s Gearshift or the use of Cineform). It’s not that I’ve had any bad experiences of these, but (perhaps irrationally) I feel that it’s just an extra stage into which errors could creep,- video editors seem buggy enough generally. My tests so far have involved importing MXF and AVCHD files to the same timeline and playing with transitions.

If MC6 converts non-native formats to MXF it seems to work pretty well and I have only to wait a while for the initial conversion to take place. The only problems I’ve met so far have been concerned with my multiple monitor setup which has tripped up the titler or upset the windows layout,- but it’s early days.

My preferred solution would certainly be – as you suggest – for Sony to harness GPU power to make the really software pleasant to use rather than something of an uphill struggle at least when dealing with HD. There are those who think that the next development in consumer / prosumer video will be 2K+ rather than 3D.. then heaven help us!

Hi Keith, as a Transcend card owner I shall be vigilant,- thanks for the warning!
