I read the original NYTimes article. Really interesting stuff. It encompasses what’s wrong with the North American Economy.

But, you can’t buy a north american house on $17/day salary. Hence, the end of the American Dream.

Republican or Democrat, you can’t fix this mess without cooperation, and it doesn’t include pork barrelling, corrupt politicians, lobbyists with $1,000,000 in sports tickets budgets.

Nope, real change is needed. It just won’t be in my lifetime

Shooting and using a video camera is completely different from shooting video with a Canon DSLR.

The look isn’t the same, and the operation is no where near as easy and convenient for primary Video Applications.

I’ve owned and used a 5D, and a 5D mark II, as well as a D90 and D7000. Try and pull a smooth zoom with a DSLR. Then try and keep it in focus, then try to auto adjust the IRIS – or Aperture.

The new Canon super camera might be a solid solution, but it’s also $16K without glass. You’ll need L glass to do the sensor justice. So with battery and accessories, you’ll have little change from $25K.

Our OP, has a budget of about $2.5K

    Marvin,

A little over budget? It’s more than twice his budget!

    That’s funny.

One of the nicest cameras on that list is the JVC GY-HM100U, which is the older model of the new model called a JVC GY-HM150U

I’ve used the 100, which you can still buy on sale for less than $2500 for the past year, and found it reliable, and likable from an Apple perspective. The even nicknamed it the FCP Camera in one thread I read. The new model is a little over your budget, but might be affordable.

This camera is used by CNN (250 copies), and others in the broadcast news/documentary segment. I use it for corporate videos, stuff like that. At the price it’s hard to beat.

You can see tons of footage at youtube.com/dbkcreative. The first 5-6 videos were produced with it.

    Good Luck

So Craig, what you are saying is the FCPX DOES transcode avchd to prores, it just does it quickly in the background. That’s a different answer to the the one you gave, which said it doesn’t have to transcode.

    It does.

I changed to Premiere Pro, but I also switched platforms to the PC.

I have tried to open older projects using the XML export that FCP has put in, and that Adobe accepts, and I can tell you it is not a picnic.

The titles don’t transfer very well, and the layers can be messed up. If it’s a simple cuts/dissolve timeline, you should be OK, but if you used FCP as I did to composite, I would not recommend leaving the LEgacy.

On the other hand, the new work I do in CS5.5 and the PC is faster and easier with the right PC. (New, CUDA based Nvidia card, etc.

I kept my Mac to handle my legacy projects. It’s still running OS10.6.x, and FCP 7.x. It will remain like that until the computer dies, which shouldn’t happen for several years. I also use the Mac platform for email, and the web. Better protection.

    Good Luck

I installed the card above. Installed the correct drivers for it – they are the NEC drivers, moved the card around, gave it power, took the power away, danced on my head – nothing.

Sometimes it says the decklink is there, other times, it does not.

I know some people are having some success with the card, but from my perspective it has been a giant waste of time and energy.

If anyone wants to buy it, let me know

Grant, I am disappointed in the implementation of this product.

Now, what do I use to monitor?

I owned both version 1’s, and while at the time a died in the wool Apple Follower, I found Lightroom easier to use, and as someone put it earlier – just plain fun to use.

As I said on this forum before, I think Apple will kill off all it’s pro applications. For what ever reason, Apple under Steve Jobs was all about control and dominance. I’m wondering if the new team and board will change that.

I’m now on PC for editing, and photography. I’m frustrated with Apple’s policy regarding killing in app purchases on the iPhone and iPad ( Zinio and Kobo as examples) and while my phone is only 1 year old, when It’s time for upgrade, I will look really hard at android. My iPad may not make it through 2011, as in Canada the new Kobo Vox – a $200 e-reader with wifi, and android 2.3 – same as the Kindle I think, has web browsing, email, zinio, and just about everything else I use on my iPad. 40% of the price. Easier to justify moving to the new one, when it comes out and you are free to use what ever you want.

No, Apple has just about lost me, and I ran a company for 10 years that spent about $30K/year on software and hardware from Apple. I know I’m a little guy, but this has to be pissing others off too.
