I think I may have solved it. In the export dialogue for MPEG Streamclip, there’s a box that says Interlaced Scaling, and above it it says ‘Deselect for progressive movies. Did a test and with said boxed unticked and it’s working. The odd thing though is for my rushes, all the footage from the first two days were giving me the render issue whereas the last two days were fine (just noticed that after your last response). I had batched transcoded them all together so don’t know why there was a discrepancy.

Regardless, unticking the box for the first two days rushes looks like it works so I can move forward.

The footage did come from a DSLR, but I’ve tried changing the field dominance of the clip and sequence to none, but to no avail. I’ve also tried changing the clip to none, then cutting into a fresh sequence to have it prompt match sequence with clip settings, but again nothing.

Apple ProRes 422 (Proxy)
Frame size 1920×1080
Square pixels
Upper (Odd) field dominance
25 fps

I’ve talked to the director about the issue and he wasn’t even sure why he cut it originally in 24 fps. Something about possibly shooting at 18 fps, having the telecine pull it to 29.97, and then diging it in at 24 fps via firewire from a camera was the only way that it looked right. He isn’t sure about the details because he did it quite a while ago. Either way he’s perfectly content with me cutting and outputting at 29.97 (phew). But out of curiosity, I tried to make a DVD from the 24 fps footage by exporting an m-peg 2 from final cut and importing it to DVD Studio Pro, but it still had interlacing problems. Considering what I’ve read about 24 fps being very good for DVD authoring I must have done something wrong. Are there any variables or settings I should be looking for?

I believe the delivery will be DVD, however I wouldn’t be surprised if the director would also want it on DBeta or BetaSP for festivals.
