Adam’s solution wins my vote, and reminds me that I really do need to familiarize myself with all of the deformers 🙂

If you can get the clones close enough to one another you might be able to use a Connect object to connect them together, but it may not be pretty.
I’m assuming that using a Sweep NURBS to generate a solid strip and then applying the repeating film strip texture is out of the question in this case? That’d be the first way I’d approach this.

Look into using the Surface Deformer. You can use this directly on a spline object. Make sure that the Spline is using an appropriate intermediate points mode that will give the spline sufficient detail to deform with the cloth (Natural is my go to in this situation, but Uniform with a high number value can work as well). However, if you extrude the spline from its deformed state the direction of the extrusion will still be in world space and won’t reflect the cloth deformation.
If you’re looking to deform the extrusion with the cloth then the setup gets a little more complicated. First you’ll need to prepare the extrusion for deformation.
Subdivide the Caps of the Extrude NURBS object under the ‘Caps’ tab. Using quadrangles in a regular grid is appropriate here.
Then place the Extrude NURBS in a Connect object with an appropriate weld setting (to attach the caps to the extrusion) and phong setting.
Finally put this Connect object inside a Null object. Place your Surface Deformer in the Null object at the same level as the Connect object.
The details of the Surface Deformer are covered pretty well in the C4D help but if you need assistance please post back!

October 24, 2012 at 4:51 am in reply to: Controlling the opacity of a nested comp from the main compThe only way to control this on a per-main-comp basis would be to keyframe the opacity in the Car comp, apply time remapping in the Main comp to the Car comp and create an expression to transition from the Car comp’s indicator ‘opaque’ to ‘transparent’ state.
Of course what this means is that you can’t really have other animation in your Car comp as it’s timeline will now be controlled separately in the many Main comps.
If needed you may be better off splitting the Car comp into separate compositions for this. Moving the Indicator comp from the car comp into the associated Main comps and then parenting the Indicator to the Car comp in that Main comp should probably work in most cases.

You could try exporting only the Alpha using Quicktime Animation at full quality (Lossless). Animation should be fairly good at compressing just the Alpha information.
I’m no expert in Premiere Pro but you should be able to then use this alpha only render as a matte there.

[Dave Rogers] “I can only see D1/DV PAL (1.09) “
Ahhh, yes. That’d be my apparent late blooming dyslexia striking again. It is in fact 1.09!

To restate what John said above: Particular should be applied ONLY to 2D layers in order for the 3D-ness of the effect to work properly.
This may seem counter-intuitive but it’s the nature of the beast.
If you want to rotate your particle system you can use the World Transform section to rotate the system independently of the camera.

[Dave Rogers] “When I toggle the pixel aspect ratio switch it does switch to the wide screen view but that isn’t how the footage was recorded as this wide screen view has people distorted. It was recorded at 4 / 3 but everything that I can play the clip with VLC player etc. plays it wide screen.”
It sounds like your footage is set to D1/DV PAL Widescreen (1.46), you should change this to D1/DV PAL (1.06).
Also make sure that your composition is using D1/DV PAL (1.06).

Once you’ve imported the footage into After Effects you’ll need to select it in the project panel and go to “Interpret Footage” (right click the footage and choose Interpret Footage > Main, or select the footage and press cmd-opt-G). At the bottom of this panel is the Pixel Aspect Ratio setting. It sounds like your footage is set to D1/DV PAL Widescreen (1.46), you should change this to D1/DV PAL (1.06).
