[Derek Nickell] “Fast Blur and Gaussian work on other sequences within the same project, just not that one.”

Makes me think it’s an issue with the source footage or possibly its interpretation, but I’ve been wrong before 🙂

January 5, 2013 at 7:26 pm in reply to: Resolution question

DPI and pixel resolution are independent. DPI and print resolution are related.

A 3000px wide image at 300 DPI would print to 10 inches wide.

If your client is only asking for 300 DPI (and not for a 16000 pixel wide image) then the solution in Photoshop should be relatively simple:

    1) Open image

    2) Activate the menu item Image > Image Size… (ctrl-alt-i on PC, cmd-opt-i on Mac)

    3) Disable the “Resample Image:” checkbox at the bottom of the Image Size dialog

    4) Enter “300” in the “Resolution:” field and make sure it’s set to “Pixels/Inch”

    5) Hit Enter to accept and you’re done.

If you want to be generous you could ask your client how large they want the printed image to be and adjust your pixel resolution to match.

I haven’t used particle illusion in almost 6 years and when I did it was the full version rather than a plug-in.

The main reason I don’t use it is that I find Trapcode Particular to be a more full fledged particle solution. I’m sure particle illusion has some features that are missing from particular, but I honestly can’t remember what those might be… must not have been important 🙂

January 4, 2013 at 8:02 pm in reply to: Stabilization of complicated dolly move

The Warp Stabilizer may help in another of the transformation modes.

If that fails then you can try and use a camera tracker to stabilize the shot. This requires a good camera solve though.

Once you have the solve you’d duplicate the solved camera, make the footage a 3D layer, parent it to the lower of the solved cameras and apply a smooth() expression to all of the top solved camera’s transform properties (position, rotation, etc.).

To keep the footage from ever leaving the frame you’d also need to either scale up the footage layer a bit or zoom in on the top (active) camera.

January 4, 2013 at 7:45 pm in reply to: Turning a 2D corner pin into a 3D perspective layer

[Navarro Parker] “Are there any clever expression tricks to convert a corner pinned 2D layer into a 3D perspective layer (Or at least a close approximation)?”

The biggest problem I see with this is that it’s very very easy to create a 2D Corner Pin that does not match any perspective. Assuming that it does match some perspective the challenges then become:

    1) defining how near or far away the corner pinned layer is from the ‘camera.’

    2) figuring out the parameters of the camera based on (1).

    3) determining the scale, position and orientation of the 3D layer based on the corner pin data as well as (1) and (2).

Maybe this is possible, but I have a suspicion that 99 times out of 100 your 2D corner pin will not match any perspective projection. At that point I wouldn’t know how to proceed. I’d assume some sort of heuristic method would work but that’s beyond my pay grade 🙂

January 4, 2013 at 5:34 pm in reply to: Texture tiling problem

The only way I can reproduce this problem in the render is by turning “Cycle” off in the Gradient shader. Although it then appears untiled in my viewport as well. Still, I’d check that box if it’s currently unchecked in your project.

[matthew chapman] ” Maybe I should be in beginner guys, BUT i tried applying echo to a pre-comped spinning Mushroom, and no luck. What the devil am I doing wrong?!”

You need to apply your transformation keyframes inside the pre-comp.

Alternatively, you can achieve some rainbow trail effects using:

    Echo + Coloroma

    or

CC Time Blend FX + Hue/Saturation

These methods both have what might be significant downsides* but they may also be exactly what you’re looking for 🙂 So here’s my contribution in project file form for your perusal:

    5154_shroomfolder.zip

I used solid colors in the Time Blend FX example but you could also tritone the image instead of using fill and then rotate the hue in the same fashion.

*The blending when using Echo isn’t ideal. Time Blend FX uses previously cached frames and so sometimes misbehaves. It also is not compatible with render multiple frames simultaneously.

January 4, 2013 at 12:02 am in reply to: AE CS6 failing on ‘fast blur’

[Derek Nickell] “I have disabled fast blur on every layer and rendered with it failing at the exact same point on the timeline without a pop-up telling me that fast blur caused it.”

The render fails without Fast Blur applied? Have you tried disabling all effects?

    What is your source footage?

Do the solid layers have any non-default layer switches enabled?

Anything else you can think of that is out of the ordinary? Project settings?

January 3, 2013 at 12:07 am in reply to: EXR vs HDR vs PSD

I believe there won’t be any difference in quality. In practice I find EXRs often take the most time to decode but I’ve only experienced that when using a sequence in AE or Nuke.
