[Ron Lindeboom] “Apple would have a hard time in court defending that one as they themselves buy their RAM from the same companies that they’d have to block.”
This is a good point, Apple doesn’t actually make many (if any) of the components that go into their computers. They engineer the case design and pick the components, but that’s about it. This would be similar to saying “You can’t change your graphics card, because that would void the warranty.” As Ron, err… Bessie says: load of bull =)

[UnitedFan] “He said “it voids the warranty, and you could just pop the RAM and bring it in, but we have ways of knowing…””
I think this is wrong… Unless they’ve changed their policy in the last few years. That said, try this site:
It looks to be a couple of dollars cheaper than the site you linked to.

[Rhett Robinson] “you should be able to scrub through the 30 minutes & grab the track in about 2 or 3 for each”
In a perfect world… unfortunately, I’m not aware of any of those =O
Your point about putting special hats on students is a decent one for a scientific study, but if you have special colored hats why would you need to track colored dots on them? Seems redundant.
Also, the larger your search/feature area is the longer your track will take, and this applies on an exponential scale.
I think you’re a little overconfident of AE’s tracker capabilities. Especially considering that students may be leaving the frame and coming back in. Having little control over the footage will also contribute to problems.
If the camera is locked down then I agree that the track should be relatively easier.

Unfortunately, AE masks aren’t the most awesome masks in the world. If a point has bezier handles then it has to have them on both the incoming and outgoing side.
My suggestion would be to try creating another linear vertex just after the bezier vertex. If the linear vertex is close enough to it, then it should appear to be a continuation of the curve or a straight line and you can create more straight lines from there.

[A.Zander] “Than you will have each bird represented as a particle (or other way around) what you than want to do is get your PPS up to say 30 for 1 second, and than set it to 0, have your life be longer than your comp, and animate away.”
In the ‘options’ dialog you can also set Pre-Run to 100% so that there is no period where birds are ’emitting’ or appearing on screen.

[turnesol] “Since Particular does not support custom particles with embedded motion, I am stumped. Can anyone help me?”
Whaaaaat? Then how did I do my flock of birds with it? =O
Just make your bird in a pre-comp animating in a loop, a ‘flap-cycle’ we’ll call it =)
Drop this pre-comp into your final comp, apply Particular to a layer and set it to use a Custom Particle, choose your bird ‘flap-cycle’ pre-comp and set it to begin on a random frame for each particle and loop.
Now tweak your settings to resemble a flock of particles.
I believe you can even enable Collapse Transformations on your custom particle layer, although Particular might have some minor issues with it.

November 9, 2007 at 4:35 pm in reply to: how do you change the duration of a frame in a jpeg sequence? If you want to make this adjustment to ALL of the JPEGs in the sequence then you should select the image sequence in your project and hit cmd+f (ctrl+f on PC) to bring up the Interpret Footage dialog, then change the Frame Rate of the image sequence from something like 30fps (default for most) to 10fps.

[Steve Roberts] “Or maybe the video is progressive, and AE has interpreted it as interlaced. Select the footage in the project window, then “file>interpret footage>main”, and “separate fields>off”.”
I made that suggestion in response to the same question (same footage) in a different thread about a week ago… I assumed the problem went away as there were no follow up questions from the poster.
Please don’t give up on your threads! Tell us what works/doesn’t work so we can sleep at night…

While this may be true, the compound blur route can yield better looking results… After all, why settle for reality when we can have BETTER than reality? (;
