Its also worth mentioning the many noise-reduction plugins that are used in post these days. The algorythms written these days for this purpose are amazingly effective and make production sound VERY clean with just a few tweaks and a click of a computer key…

I use them quite often, almost every day in post. Of course, we still PREFER to have the cleanest/highest quality audio possible coming in from the field, and I have never been a fan of the “we’ll just fix it in post” attitude. I have a feeling there is probably some sort of noise reduction software involved in a lot of the reality shows nowadays.

ProTools M-Powered is identical to LE in every aspect except:

    1) it is not available w/Ignition Pack bundle (which you probably don’t need)
    2) it doesn’t support the Control24 control surface (there are others)
    3) it doesn’t support the DVtoolkit option (not needed for radio production)
    4) it doesn’t support DigiTranslator (used to import/export OMF files)

All other features should be the same, plus you have many more i/0 interfaces choices w/m-powered and are not limited to Digidesign’s pre-amps (you can get higher quality). And it comes w/an i-lok dongle included, which LE does not.

The Tascam FW-1082 does not appear on the supported hardware list (as does any Tascam product), but the NRV10 ($699) is a similar product if you absolutely need a controller + i/o interface.

I would also add to that list the ZOOM H4. I use it to record SFX (@ 96khz) for a post house building its own library and have recorded with it almost every day for the past two weeks since purchasing (with both the internal and external mics) and have not been disappointed in the sonic quality. It has 2 XLR inputs and provides phantom power.

I was very skeptical before buying (because its from Samson) but have so far been thrilled with its value. It goes for $250-300…

If you work on a Mac, check out Soundminer software. I have used it for years and highly recommend it. You would only need the LE version since you are not in a multi-room audio house sharing soundfile access through a server…

    Info is at http://www.soundminer.com
