Thanks for the insight. I was thinking of rotoscoping the talking head out of the background, putting in a clean background, then I would only have to touch up the frames where BTC intruded on to the head.
Yes, a nightmare.

Forgive this question – I’m not up-to-date – but I assume I only need 4k output for a 4k monitor – but why would I need 4k input? Would that be for a live stream? Or some manner of 4k deck?(?!) Or is it to process the denser info of a 4k signal? Isn’t the footage input via Sandisks taken removed from your camera?
I basically edit on my own. When I go 4k I assume the first step, after buying a 4k camera, is to buy an imac with a 4k monitor.
Thanks again.

My Beta deck does have SDI out (as well as S-video, component, and composite). I don’t really know how big a difference you’d get on SD footage going out SDI as opposed to out component. the signal will ultimately be up-resd to HD.
Will the Ultrastudio express do it? And how do I get the audio in along with the video? The SDI does deliver the audio as well, yes? -
Well, I am close to a rough cut at this point. Editing is hard enough – I don’t want to try and learn a new program.
I want to winnow down the material to something close to the final version before bringing it into another program (via XML). I plan to bring on an editor to help make that transition and then fine cut, redo titles, sound mix, colorgrade, etc…
So this I/O should work for FCP7 and a newer program.
I am aware of the Blackmagic Design Intensity for $227 and the Blackmagic Design UltraStudio Express $470 which have some of the features I need.
Suggestions? Something else, maybe?
Thanks. -

December 27, 2015 at 10:43 pm in reply to: FCP7 Sequence preset question- $20 paypal tip to best answer!Did you keep the 4/3 aspect ratio of your SD footage or crop it to 16:9?
I plan to keep the aspect ratio 4:3, and wonder what settings would be used to up-res it? My current digital SD files are Prores 720X486, 29.97 fps, 24 bit audio Little endian.
Compressor doesn’t seem to offer a prores HD 4:3 preset. What would be the settings? Would it stay in Prores?
Thanks.

December 27, 2015 at 10:38 pm in reply to: FCP7 Sequence preset question- $20 paypal tip to best answer!Did Aja or Matrox ever make a card for a mac Power PC tower that would convert to HD and scale? I have an old mac tower and it would be better to convert from a deck via an old mac than have to buy a new card and a new mac tower running OSX.
Still got $20 burning a hole in my paypal account!

December 24, 2015 at 10:50 pm in reply to: FCP7 Sequence preset question- $20 paypal tip to best answer! Are there any settings you would suggest in Compressor? I need to look at all the options, but I assume there are things like frame blending and interpolation. Remember I need to end up at 24p HD. Thanks again.

I’ll kick you some $ if you get me an email address. I’m dandmcguire at gmail.I will eventually need to online this project in either Premiere or FCPX, and also need to think about making that transition. I assume I can continue to work with FCP7 until I need to output my xml and import it in to another program – FCPx seems to allow you to change the sequence settings after the fact.
Am I right in thinking that I can drop SD NTSC and SD PAL and HD 1080 24fps footage all in the same sequence of FCPX or Premiere? My footage is 85% SD NTSC, 5% SDPAL and 10% HD. In addition to the resolution issue, there is a frame rate issue. I hope to eventually output at 1080p 24 fps.
Thanks again.DAN

June 12, 2014 at 1:58 pm in reply to: Compressor or log and transfer for various footage?Thank you so much, Micheal. I did not realize that the quality settings in the xa10 actually sets dimensions of the frames. I have to shoot everything in highest quality mode if I want to cut the canon 5d footage into it.
So right now I have a ton of xa10 footage which is 1440 x 1080 and 5D footage which is 1920 x 1080Does it make sense to upscale the xa10 footage to 1920×1080? Is that even possible in Compressor?
Thanks again.
