Either WMV or H.264 would suit. However you really need to get hold of a transcoder like Squeeze or Procoder or similar. AFX is not going to do a good job for you.

In which case you’ll probably need to look at adding something like the Manzanita Enhanced Multiplexer to your favorite transcoding package.

DVB is a transmission method but pretty well any software transcoder that fully supports MPEG-2 Main Profile at Main Level (MP@ML) will produce ‘compliant’ streams.

Simple answer is no.
Long answer:
MiniDV tape only accepts the DV format. You HAVE to transcode. By transcoding to DV you’ll likely be upping the bitrate by a large amount so you’ll not exactly be compressing it. The MiniDV output will likely not look any worse than the Xvid, assuming that the Xvid has a frame size close to 720×480 or 720×576, if it’s any smaller then it’ll have to be scaled up and that’ll almost certainly make it look much worse.__________________________________________________________________

Simply put, you need to transcode the Xvid to DV. You could use a transcoder like Procoder or Squeeze or any number of others or you could use an NLE like Premiere, which would then allow you to play out the converted file to tape via Firewire.

Does the same thing happen when you export using a different codec, you could try a short section of your program, Try WMV or QT PhotoJPEG.
Does the same thing happen when you transcode to a different format, WMV for example.
I know of a number of people who have problems with Squeeze, I know even more people who have problems with MS DV AVIs

What software do you have that’ll allow you to play out MiniDV to tape? E.g. Adobe Premiere

Agreed, MPEG-2 is not going to work unless you have the MPEG-2 Quicktime component installed on Mac and a 3rd party MPEG-2 decoder on Windows.
