Episode has both batch and watch folders in the latest version. There are no limits to the number of encodes you can do in a certain period of time but there might be a limit to the number of files each folder or batch can handle at once, I’ve certainly never reached it. That aside, Episode is a much better encoder than squeeze.

That’s only a limitation applied by Sorenson, no other Mac encoding application, eg Episode, does this…
That said – it souds like Squeeze it getting hung-up with one of your jobs and that is stalling your process. – Considering the huge number of files you need to process, I’d be looking at a far more enterprise level solution to do the job. Squeeze is quite obviously a (buggy*) desktop only product.

Danny it was MFX file converters that I was calling into question, not MXF.
As there are so many different ‘flavors’ of MXF, not all ‘unwrappers’ or readers work with all files.

Any solution would require that you re-transcode each clip all over again and that would usually cause a hit in quality as well as taking a long time.
I recently completed a similar job but followed a different route:
VHS was digitised to MiniDV using just a VHS deck and MiniDV camera. MiniDV captured into iMovie which automatically detected each scene and split into individual clips, all dissolves added in one drag and drop, titles and BG music added.
Exported to iDVD for DVD authoring.
It doesn’t get much easier or quicker than that!

Was it shot interlaced or progressive?
The artefacting you are seeing doesn’t sound like interlacing it could just be the result of poor down-scaling – any chance of posting a screen grab?

Are you sure you don’t mean MXF?
If they really are MFX then there are supposed to be tools out there that can do the job but I wouldn’t touch them with a long stick..or the sites that host them without serious protection. Mac’s of course are immune…

StreamZ will only better Compressor if you feed it a signal from a deck rather than a file. Compressor has the tools to do a much better job with file based stuff.
Please give more details on your source, your settings and the problem.

It’s a speed up of 4%, you won’t lose anything other than picture quality (HDCAM < MiniDV) but the pitch of the audio will be 'slightly' higher. Don't worry, here in PAL land we are very used to getting american movies in such a way. Either the DVD player would deinterlace it or the HDTV would, same as it would if you fed it a regular TV channel.
With the latest (and very low cost) upscaling DVD players from the likes of Samsung you might get better results than letting the HDTV do it. All depends on the make, model and spec.
