This is an old thread I’m reviving, maybe I should create a new one, yet when you do a search on the internet, I searched “scope height 1920” I came upon this thread, and a few other ressources.

As we’re luck to have a set of Lomo anamorphics at our disposal, we’ve been testing them, and other lenses, see: https://vimeo.com/cside/scope-test

We’ve noticed there are many variations of scope, often refered to as 2.35, but in fact sometimes it’s 2.37 or even 2.39

To be noted the DCP standard has been defined as 2.38694638694639 (that’s 2048 / 858)

Now I have some films I’ve been handed over in HD (1920 x 1080) with black masking on top and bottom (letterboxing) to fill the frame. I have a number of films in scope and don’t want to upload them with the black masks. When I crop the black, one film results in a height of 804 pixels and another of 817.

I’ve just found out some cameras now offer to shot in “cinemascope” (if you can call it that) and use a 1920 x 810 image size, as that is in the middle of the varieties I have come across, I feel like that is a good compromise, also because it’s somewhat a round number (compared to 804 or 817).

I have therefore decided to adopt that image size for HD output, for Vimeo and such, and I would like to encourage people to do the same so we can limit the varieties of file formats out there.

That sounds exactly like what I need, but I cannot find this option. I went through the Resolve manual but cannot find a reference to this option. Can you tell how to do this please?

Hi Sascha,

Thanks for your suggestion. Yes I have “A better Finder Renamer” but it will be a lot of work at this stage. Renaming is quick sre but then all the files will need to be relinked. This is a 1 hour documentary film with 3 To of rushes, of all types, archival, shot for the film, stills, animation, etc.

Is there no way, either in Davinci to import tff image as stillsm or from FCPX to export an XML that somehow says theses are still images?

Thanks all for contributing to this thread.

Of course MPEG-2 is not ideal for grading, but isn’t it best to grade your native footage and avoid going through a transcode, which may not be optimal?

If you grade your native files, you avoid a generation loss. Of course my renders and exports out of Resolve are either in ProRes 422 HQ (when going to Broadcast, web, DVD and BDR delivery) or ProRes 4444 when going to DCP.

Hi David,
I want to grade Mpeg-2 footage because that is the native shooting format.

I have solved my issue by installing the Apple Pro Codecs thanks the the great utility unPKG.

Hi,

Thanks for your feedback. I did press the use Hardware button. It’s really odd, like I said, my monitor’s HDMI port was not working for a while, during which time I struggled. I ended up using a HDMI to DVI converter, but only after having installed Yosemite and the Matrox 4.5 drivers, and that worked. Then I retried the HDMI, and low and behold it stared working again.

Media Composer did crash a few times, particularly (but not only) after going into the Matrox Control Panel to change settings. I do feel that MC is not very stable under Yosemite. I may try switching back to Mavericks at some point, it’s not quite clear if MC 8.3 is supported with the Matrox 4.2 drivers or if one needs the 4.5 drivers, which are said to be for Yosemite only.

Thank you for your feedback. Going through the Matrox forusm I came to the conclusion I needed to instal Yosemite and the latest Matrox drivers (4.5). Did that, and still no video output…
