I thought you could import a 3D model into AE. I’m a newbie so maybe that is wrong. I know I’ve read tutorials on creating a 3D set by setting various planes as floors and walls. Programs like Maya are great, but very complex and I’m hoping to devise an easier way of animating some characters.

I haven’t tried Media Encoder yet. My current idea is rendering lossless from AE, import into Premiere and edit the shots together, then export into a compress web-friendly codec…probably a 720p file in some flavor of H.264.

The destination is for web distribution, so Youtube, Vimeo, my own site, Funny or Die…that sort of thing. I assume the output will be some flavor of H.264. Backing up from there is where things get complicated. I’m exporting 1280X720 shots from AE as Lossless Quicktime Files. Maybe I should export them as Prores HQ? Or would that may render times even longer?

I have a tangential question to slow rendering: In the render queue AE says it’s only using 45% or 50% of the 12 GB of ram on my iMac. Is there a way to make it use more? And would that improve render times? Or is this just telling me it only requires that percentage of available RAM?

I’m also learning AE, and everything I’ve read says to have the program on one drive (typically the internal drive), and elements on another drive (typically the external drive or secondary internal drive). The better the connection between this secondary drive and your main computer, the faster things will render. The fact that exported compositions don’t play back smoothly also amazed me, but then the files are typically uncompressed and much larger and the typical computer doesn’t have the horsepower to play such files.

Thanks. Yes, I noticed that just the top camera renders. I’d hoped to stack up a bunch of renders and then let them all crunch overnight. Looks like I’ll have to do them one at a time. I’ll have to sort through your last graph about collapsed transformation and pre-comps. My head is spinning.

I don’t have a problem importing one project into another. What I can’t do is copy a folder of elements from one project and paste them into another. Your “file reduce” suggestion should do the trick…thanks!

Yes, bu my pet peeve is opening the folder the file is within. If I want to open a file in say Word, I can double click the folder in the “open” window and it will reveal all the files inside. When I do this in AE…it imports the entire folder.

Just a thought: hold camera against your head, shoot some video, then track the motion and apply that motion to your AE camera.

I second that tutorial as a mind-blower. Coincidenally, I posted a question on the basic forum about using the Duduf IK process to create a walk cycle. Any tips on that?
