FCP X can read the directory structure (allegedly) of cameras that shoot AVCHD video to SD cards, and allow us to import clips (or parts of clips) via File —> Import From Camera…
It’s supposed to be able to either import off connected cameras/cards, OR from “masters” of those cards that are copied to an external disk (the workflow being offloading/backing up CF cards, with their folder structure intact, and then erasing them).
FCP X does not seem to read the Canon 5d’s folder structure (for now), which is lame.
Yes, we can use File —> Import, it’s just messier.

I’m doing the Larry Jordan training as I type this but I can’t wait to try this out this weekend! I’m really gonna need to be syncing a ton of sound the summer…

Had the same problem. No way I’m messing with any workaround right now though; they’ll release an update, this kind of thing is easy to fix.

The reason I re-export is because I tend to have 20-40min audio clips and like 50 video clips that span that time period. Linking doesn’t give me just the portion of good audio I want for any particular video clip.

I’m having kind of a similar issue. I haven’t played around with FCP X’s audio syncing enough yet though… and I’m not familiar enough yet with the interface to chalk the sync failure up to anything other than ‘user error’ at this point.

“Chop the new audio so it is the same length as the video master clip. Match frame the audio and cut is an audio subclip back to the timeline, then make a merged clip (if you don’t subclip, your merged clip will take the longer length of the new audio master clip, instead of the length of the video master clip). Export a quicktime of this merged clip to a new folder.
The crucial instruction here doesn’t make sense….. can you please explain? This is exactly the problem I’m having…

I’ve adjusted the capture settings to match, in the exact same scenario, but I’m getting a huge loss in quality (and lots of jagged edges) in the DV footage I’m bringing into FCP. Something must not be right, because it’s the image looks great in the camera and also in FCP’s Log and Capture preview window.
Any thoughts?

I am going to rebuild the Motion project from scratch. That makes it sound bad, but it should take THAT long..
I think this is one of those things that contributes to the impression that Motion is (as you say) “predictably weird.”

Built in 4:3 with that 16:9 squish in mind.
The footage on the DVD is 16:9, so naturally I would like this to be as well; this clip is the DVD’s “first play” target.
