Jim, I have NO IDEA what I did differently on the third try, but hey, you know what they say about the third try! But it appears that the .c4d file is uploading correctly!
I don’t have C4D, so I can’t actually test it, but try downloading this, and let me know if it came through okay!

Hmmm, I’m going to have to look into this some more. I’m showing that the file type is enabled, and it turned out that my educated guess on the mime type was exactly correct, so all signs are pointing to it being configured correctly….but like you, I’m getting an error message when I try.
I’ll read up on the settings to see if there’s something I’m not doing right. Otherwise, I’ll report it as a bug. I’ll let you know!
In the meantime, zip is going to be the way to go. Glad to see that that one’s working anyway!

Confirming that the zip file downloads fine. Can you try uploading the .c4d file without zipping first? I think that I have the .c4d extension configured properly, but I don’t have a file to test with.

The goal is obviously to rework our image processing to not degrade the images in the first place, but hey, I have no idea where the bottleneck is yet, or how hard it’s going to be to rewire.
But the imgur solution works today, and is really only a couple of clicks longer than the direct upload process. A workaround that works is a lovely thing to use while we wait to develop the proper long-term solution!

Okay, so this isn’t a very pretty photo, but I chose it on purpose because it’s super noisy, and any new compression artifacts would show up right away.
In #1, I used our image uploader, which reduced the size by 50% (even though my file was well under the 2MB limit), and introduced a LOT of noise.
Specifically, the image was at 2566×1494, and was uploaded as 1024×576. That’s gruesome, but the compression is even worse than the rescaling. That’s an ugly, ugly upload.
In #2, I uploaded the photo to imgur, right-clicked to copy it, then pasted it directly into the post. BOOM! Full size, baby.
The disadvantage is that the pasted image doesn’t open into our lovely full-screen image viewer….but the fact that our full-screen image viewer is blowing back up an image that has been reduced by 50% in size and compressed using who knows what makes that feature not exactly useful either.
However, right-clicking on the larger image and selecting “Open in New Window” works dandy, and looks pretty darn good.
I’m still working through this, and invite other folks to upload and test this too! And hey, now that I’ve figured out that copy-paste works for pasting full-size images, I may actually upload a photo that I like, instead of one that I chose specifically because it was already pretty bad.
And I do highly, highly recommend getting a free imgur account. I use it all the time for copy-paste processes like this, and other stuff too. It’s fast, easy, and non-invasive. You’ll dig it.

Hey folks, chiming in here with a small feature update! We’ve just added file upload to the forums, which will work for things like project files, as well as a bunch of other stuff: PDF, PPT, disk images, PSD, Illustrator, what have you — dozens of formats in all, most with previews where applicable, with more coming.
And for any of your favorite file types not covered yet, you can pop ’em in a zip file, which is already supported.
You can find the file uploader in the toolbar of the text entry window, between image upload and emojis.
Among the file types supported is MP4, but only as a file type. That is, there’s no player attached to this just yet.
The reason that this hadn’t been enabled in the old COW for the past few years is that it’s a harder feature to develop and maintain than it appears. There’s a bunch of back-end stuff related to encoding if you’re going to do it right, which is also why it will take a bit longer for us to reintroduce here.
On the roadmap, though!In the meantime, far more than YouTube is supported for videos in forum posts! I’ve tested and confirmed Vimeo, Dailymotion, imgur, and Facebook so far myself, and the feature set is identical: paste the URL in your post, and when you publish the post, we handle the embed for you. Very neat and clean!
