Base RAM = 32GB. I priced 128GB RAM from Kingston via Amazon +$1400 installed. Apple surely won’t do it for less than $1500, and could easily get more.

Base drive = 1TB. Again from Amazon, a 4TB from Samsung for $1500, and again assuming that Apple will charge more than this.

No criticism of Apple implied. They SHOULD be taking a premium for factory installation and testing….but I can see this going well past $8000 for sure, and possibly pushing up against $10,000 once you throw in Apple Care. ????

Even more than the lack of slots, I’m surprised that Apple fails to offer truly pro-level support. Can you imagine any other company not even bothering to offer on-site service or next day parts as a paid option? That’s insane to me.

I don’t care what specs you put in the box. I want to know that you’ve got my back if something goes wrong, next business day. This isn’t theory or magic or hype. Everybody else is doing it.

Fortunately, there are dealers who’ll fill in the gaps in Apple’s coverage, but until they’re willing to meet the basic threshold long-established across the TRULY pro TRULY workstation industry, I still feel like Apple is trying to pass off a prosumer platform in pro’s clothing.

Sorry not sorry, it takes more than specs to be a pro workstation provider.

This from The Verge:

Apple says the computer will ship with an 8-core Xeon processor, with configurations that scale up to an 18-core Xeon processor, 5K display, and an all-new AMD Radeon Vega graphics GPU. You’ll also be able to shell out for up to 16GB of VRAM, up to 128GB of data corruption-protecting ECC RAM, and up to 4TB for SSD storage.

So, what’s the delta between an 8-core Xeon and an EIGHTEEN core Xeon? (It’s also available as a 10 core).

The base configuration is also only for 8GB VRAM, not 16, and 32GB RAM, not 128. Buying four sticks of 32 ECC RAM from Kingston via Amazon will run you $1322 — surely only a fraction of what Apple will charge.

Then of course a 4TB SSD, up from the base config of 1TB — $1500 plus or minus at Amazon. So cranking up RAM, VRAM, and the drives will mostly double the $5000 starting price. I’m going to guess $8999? That’s a SKU I could sell with a straight face.

Heck, in a world with a $1000 iPhone, what’s a $9999 iMac? Nuthin’. Bring it.

Oh, and most important of all: you know it’s a pro machine because it has a 3.5mm headphone jack.

Unfortunately, Firefox doesn’t support this pasting images. That is, we here at the COW see around 100 various configurations of OS and browser come through the meadow every month, and we’re happy to support every feature possible in all of them, but this just doesn’t work in Firefox.

Please note that dragging and dropping DOES work in Firefox, and is a nifty improvement on the previous implementation of embedding images.

Firefox came along soon after the COW started (we went online in 2001; Firefox launched in 2002), and within just a few years, it was the overwhelming favorite, both in-house, and among our members and visitors. Nowadays, it’s down to 10%, and falling fast. This time next year, it might be half of that.

We’d sure be happy to see them return to some semblance of their former glory, but in practice, it’s hard for open source software in any field to compete with the deep pockets at Google, Microsoft, and Apple, especially in a field evolving as quickly as the web.

In the meantime, for what it’s worth, we don’t track our members, regardless of browser, and we don’t share information with any third parties, advertising or otherwise.

And many thanks for coming on your favorite browser, whichever it is. ???? We’ll continue to do our best to support them all.

Thanks for considering volunteering!

I find the easiest way to do tutorials — and in practice for me over the years, the ONLY way — is jpg screen captures and text. (This is back in the days when I knew something worth sharing. ????) I’m afraid I don’t know much about any other methods.

The couple of times I did this with other people when I worked at Avid, the workflow was to lay down the audio track while capturing a rough demo, then cutting in any video inserts and adding any space to the VO necessary to make the two fit together. Not rocket science, but still some actual science.

And of course nobody was needing to look at my mug while this was going on, so no green screen or PiP.

I wish I had any more advice for you beyond that….

Hi Dave,

There’s no editorial staff here. Every tutorial we’ve posted at the COW — over 8000 of them! — was created by one of our members who wanted to both make it and share it. We simply haven’t had anyone interested in creating them for these, at least not since I arrived here in 2006.

If you’re interested in creating some, I can walk you through the process. Of course I understand that you were seeking tutorials, rather than volunteering to create them, but that’s where we’re at.

We may already have what you are looking for!

The range of past posts is user-selectable under a pop-up menu. We set different defaults for each forum, based on the amount of traffic there. Otherwise, a setting of 2 weeks would make some forums take forever to load because they have dozens of posts every day, whereas forums like the Letters to the COW Team forum may only get one or two posts per week.

In any case, we make it possible for you to override the defaults with this pop-up.

If you select “New Today”, those are the only ones you’ll see.

You should also set your forum view as shown here:

This sorts threads with newest posts at the top. By clicking on the timestamp of the most recent post as shown at the far right of each thread title, you can go directly to that post.

Try those options, and see if this is what you are looking for. If not, please let us know!
