John S, it’s much easier to upload your file here at Creative COW. Just above the text entry box for making posts, you’ll see a row of icons. The one on the far right looks like a little floppy disk. Click that to upload any file. Once it is uploaded, you’ll see a URL that you can copy into a post, and people can just grab it.

I’ve been around long enough that COMPUTERS signaled the demise of professional editing.
Back in 1984, any monkey with a checkbook could buy an EditDroid for $87,000 and use the same system George Lucas uses. Based on laser discs! Film is dead!
Then it was UVW BetaSP. For $25,000, you could have a broadcast deck, a broadcast camera and a broadcast lens — except that people were adamant that there was NO WAY that a $25,000 kit was broadcast ready. Because any monkey who can afford a new car can now compete with the biggest networks and post houses.
Then, when I lived in Florida, a neighbor of mine offered his kid 3 choices for his high school graduation: a used car, a used boat, or a new Media 100 system, all right around $16,000. The kid took the NLE, and we all shuddered: any monkey who could afford a USED car, or had a generous dad, could now call himself an editor.
And so it goes.
And yes, all of them signaled the death of professional editing. There are many deaths still to come.
Soon, I will be able to close my eyes and edit an entire feature film in my head without ever touching a physical object, and somebody is going to say to me, “What? You close your eyes?”

Avid Studio is not at all related to Media Composer, or even Xpress. It’s the rebranded version of Pinnacle Studio.
Gerwyn’s point is that Avid Studio is consumer software. Prosumer is a pretty long stretch, imo, although it does have the Blu-ray authoring and 5.1 mixing that is virtually universal in the Windows world. It’s $169 software (newly increased from $129) that’s positioned against iMovie.
So I don’t think FCPX is equivalent to Studio…even though Studio has Blu-ray and FCPX doesn’t…but given what else people are talking about here, it’s in play, with the added twist that it’s across platforms.

The more I think about it, I would be happiest if Apple did next to NOTHING to actually develop these features, and focused on HOOKS for third parties.
I’ll give you an example using codecs. Would you rather have (alphabetically I think) ARRI, Canon, Panasonic, RED, Sony and the like making sure that their footage is ready to use natively, with performance that might even be faster than what Apple could do, IMMEDIATELY, every time a new format is released? Or wait for Apple to get around to working it in and maybe not have it work as well as it might.
But Apple has to provide the hooks.
They did this better than anybody else ever has with FXPlug. Look at GPU-accelerated plugs from people like CoreMelt. They not only look and act like native plug-ins, but in FCP 7, they’re far faster than anything that Apple themselves came up with, and provide titling, FX, and audio features that Apple never got around to. With products as good as these for such reasonable prices, why would Apple have bothered? I’d hope they wouldn’t.
Knowing that Apple can make hooks of that quality, now in 64 bits, I WANT third parties to lead the way with features, while Apple focuses on the core, and the hooks.
Heresy I know, and frustrating as all get-out until the features that Apple has indicated are coming (multicam, XML, etc.) actually show up, but the focus on foundation rather than features for this first release may be what excites me most.
Note that I have no comment on how Apple has managed this, their commitment to pros, blah blah blah. It’s not that I have an opinion and won’t share it for political reasons. I really don’t have one. Anyone who will ever read this knows more than I do. I’m just saying that I can imagine this working itself out in a pretty interesting way.
Of course, my opinion is worth the amount of money I make using FCP, which is zero. But I was both an editor and a developer, so my perspective on the value of lean development to maximum experience is different than most.
Hooks, baby. I’m saying it’s all about the hooks. Get that as right in the future as FXPlug, and the possibilities are very nearly endless.
