I see some folks posting on here that probably have a financial dog in this fight. That is they receive money, or an in-kind payment of some type from a software or hardware vendor. In the interest of fairness, and sticking with the so called FTC “mommy blogger rules” these relationships are required to be disclosed. I have yet to see anyone here or on other review sights and/or blogs make such a disclosure even though some of you have such an arrangement.
This is a partial synopses of the new FTC rules that apply:

The revised Guides specify that while decisions will be reached on a case-by-case basis, the post of a blogger who receives cash or in-kind payment to review a product is considered an endorsement. Thus, bloggers who make an endorsement must disclose the material connections they share with the seller of the product or service.

I don’t believe an NDA, or a partial NDA that allows you to talk about the product, after its release exempts those that receive free copies of software, hardware or actual cash from having to disclose this relationship. In other words if you don’t want to or can’t talk about your relationship with a vendor, then technically you can’t review it either.
And in fairness to all those that read these posts, you should disclose relationships with any vendor that you are reviewing, or commenting on.

    Fine.

    Here’s my disclosure.

I have NO financial relationships with ANY company or product in place here.

I’m a self-employed video producer who regularly shoots, edits, and delivers content to relatively large corporations primarily in the areas of Pet Products and Services, Swimming Pool Supplies, Health-Care Services (blood banking) and general IT.

I spent a decade as a columnist, general writer, and contributing editor at Videomaker Magazine, but have had no formal business relationship with them for more than 5 years.

I’m writing my personal opinions and nobody’s paying me a penny for them.

    Bill,
I know we have a difference of views on X, but never for a moment was I thinking this was something you were doing.
I hope you were just joking around.

Actually, I don’t want to accuse anyone of anything. I think there are some passionate people out there that are lucky enough to get some comps, toys, long term demos or a few bucks that hadn’t really thought about this.

Interesting, b/c I’m pretty sure you accused me of being one of the board’s “Apple Certified Apologists”. Which I thought was an awesome term as well as funny as hell. No hard feelings.

    Matt,
Fanboy seems very inflammatory to many, and is starting to get overused, so I was just trying to switch it up and think of something clever!
It’s all in good fun and just some teasing. I’m a huge fanboy of that Japanese car and motorcycle maker that starts with H, and will gladly admit it.
Wasn’t saying you’re one of the shills either, so I’m glad there’s no hard feelings.

In the interest of full disclosure, I own some apple stock. I also use Apple products to make money.
