I’m not understanding your workflow. A two minute HD clip can’t be 40k unless you’ve compressed it to something else and it would have to be mashed pretty heavily to be only 40kb.

What kind of HD are you working with in FCP?

How are you exporting it from FCP?

If you’re compressing it on export from FCP (Quicktime Conversion) WHY?

What settings are you using in Compressor?

Generally a data rate of 150kbps is going to be WAY too low for a 480×360 frame size but it really depends on what’s happening in the content.

Data rate combines audio and video. The H.264 High Broadband preset is 800kbps combined in both Quicktime and Compressor.

I used my own test file (DV, self contained export from FCP to my desktop) and used the Quicktime Broadband High setting in QT and in Compressor and the both look EXACTLY the same, have the same file size/data rate.

Sorry, but I can’t help but think you’re doing something other than using the same setting in Quicktime Conversion vs export to Compressor.

Had drives themselves don’t have a “compression method.” Hard drives used for recording from cameras do have feature sets which determine how the files are “wrapped.”

Look at Focus Enhancements FireStore series for example. There’s also CitiDisk. Sony has their own hard drive too. You’ll have to seem if they wrap the file in a way that’s easy/time efficient for your NLE to handle.

Compressor and Quicktime Conversion should look exactly the same since it’s the same “engine.”

I really think you’re having an issue understanding the settings.

You need to be able to identify your target and then use the appropriate preset or customize the settings (much better).

What is the typical speed of the internet connection of your target?
Will the viewer likely have QT 7?
How powerful at decoding is the viewer’s computer likely to be?

Once you know (or guess) that, you need to consider exactly what the content is of your source file and then modify the settings to compromise your quality the least.

I’ve actually seen a “formula” posted which indicates how the frame is chosen but you’d have to change the length to change the frame chosen.

Make sure you activate from an Admin account. Make sure you have File Vault Off.

You’re seeing a serial number (and name?) that’s not yours?

Try creating a New User account with Admin status and install and register from there.

That’s a sure sign it’s in trial or demo mode.
Go to your system prefs and the Flip4Mac WMV pref pane and go to the license tab and make sure it shows your serial number and type of license (studio).
