On the Windows side of things Quicktime 7 would pretty much be no go even to have.

Apple now posting Quicktime 7 Uninstall instructions. They do mention how to save the Pro registration key but not why one would do that.

So I really think it’s time for professionals to look elsewhere.

It’s unfortunate that your transcriber is using deprecated software. Apple is no longer developing Quicktime 7 so I don’t think anyone is going to make a strong move towards compatibility. Your Transcribe should probably consider Telestream Switch.

  • Back when CMOS sensors were coming into vogue people would fret about how their clients would react. These days I’m seeing in narrative broadcast. I think there’s been an assumption that there’d be a negative response that hasn’t really happened. With the pervasive nature of CMOS, it’s become the new norm.

WMV can’t be imported into FCPX
WMV wrapped as MOV imports but there is no audio.

Quicktime 7 reports the codec I tested as Video VC-1, Audio Windows Media Audio 9 Standard
Quicktime X transcodes the WMV to H.264 before playing

I’ve had odd issues imported XAVC-L from Sony X70 media straight from a card reader. Not so after creating the Camera Archive and importing from that, which is my normal workflow. It seems that FCPX some times has issues reading the metadata from cards on the first attempt.

Since much of PixelFilm seems to be based on “ideas” created elsewhere, I was looking for an “origin” and unfortunately not finding one. Perhaps contact Niclas Bahn at Noise Industries (FXFactory) since a few of the names you mention are all partners.

There’s ProTimer but given PixelFilmStudio’s history I’m wondering if there’s another version by someone else.

[Robin S. Kurz] “Why should they have to pay for playback? FCP/Apple doesn’t have to either in the case of RED. It’s a free plugin. I don’t see why it should be such a big deal to simply tie into it.”

    I’d agree.

I’d mention that CatDV does require one to purchase the Calibrated decoders for XDCAM family playback, not that I think that should be the model for KeyFlow Pro. As you note, the plugin is free. Same for XDCAM and XAVC support I believe.

[Robin S. Kurz] “I think the standard folder structure and getting it sorted is the difficulty, not the playback itself”

In my case, unlike Camera Archives, KeyFlow Pro does see the file content of XDCAM and XAVC-L folders directly. It doesn’t see them as video though, just data files.

Have you tried pulling out the Redcode media files directly (R3D inside the RDC folder, granted may not be useful in that form but it would be an experiment to see if decoding is the issue)? Are the .Red mov proxies seen inside folder structure?

[Robin S. Kurz] “It also still doesn’t do RED. Big bummer.”

I think in general they should consider how to handle codecs not part of AVFoundation. Certainly buying plugins is possible. Ideally if there were some way it could access the codecs supported in FCPX or made a license deal with the manufacturers, that would be good even if it were an add on purchase.
