I use a second computer to monitor the stream destination. I’d avoid using things like Little Snitch when streaming.
Keep in mind the CPU is being used by everything you have running so I dedicate my on location streaming computer to that task alone unless I’m bringing in a guest by Skype. When I do that I use a second monitor and capture that. Wirecast 8.x with Rendezvous may be an alternative to Skype and the second screen but there’s still some kinks to be worked out.

Since later versions of Wirecast (now at version 8.1) can use Apple H.264 (Intel QuickSync) you can get even more overhead.

That doesn’t seem to be true for me. I replaced my late 2013 MacPro with a third party SSD. It’s Kingston from MCETech and it’s APFS.

There was a Wirecast Play Studio that has the same IP support as Wirecast Studio. No longer available though.

Wirecast Cam should work with Wirecast Play. That’s an iPhone app though. It can autodetect or us IP address. So there’s nothing wrong with being available. You have to use the app with it. Nothing to do with third party IP cameras though.

IP cameras use the Web Stream plugin. You don’t mention that you tried that that though. That would state Studio though indicating it’s only a Studio option (and there was a Play Studio).

Wirecast Play doesn’t support IP cameras.
Wirecast Cam is an iOS app that would allow you to use your iPhone as a camera though. Wirecast Cam is being replaced with Wirecast Go2 Which uses WebRTC (Rendezvous) to send either by Wifi or LTE to Wirecast and can be used with “group video” (think filed reporters who not only send to base but can see/hear each other as well).
Wirecast Play is holding at version 6.0.7 at the moment.
Wirecast Studio and Wirecast Pro are now at version 8.
