  • Getting IP cameras to work

Posted by Todd Terry on September 16, 2017 at 1:19 pm

    Hey all…

Are there any tips or tricks that I don’t know about to get IP cameras to work with Wirecast Play?

I’ve tried everything I know, I have a couple of cameras that I’d like to feed into Wirecast Play. I can get the cameras to work (and see them) just using a web browser, but I can’t seem to set the IP addys within Wirecast.

The way I have tried is by adding a new “Wirecast Cam” under “Sources” and then attempting to input the IP addresses for each camera… but I get nothing.

I will freely admit that I’m a TOTAL novice with Wirecast… I don’t normally do live streaming in my day-to-day life at ALL… but I put on a Halloween extravaganza at my house each year (and scare the bejeepers out of trick-or-treaters), and I want to be able to stream the mayhem online. I did this last year, but just with one camera (I just used a USB webcam). That was easy, but I’d love to do it better with multiple cams.

    Any wisdom is greatly appreciated.

Wirecast Play doesn’t support IP cameras.
Wirecast Cam is an iOS app that would allow you to use your iPhone as a camera though. Wirecast Cam is being replaced with Wirecast Go2 Which uses WebRTC (Rendezvous) to send either by Wifi or LTE to Wirecast and can be used with “group video” (think filed reporters who not only send to base but can see/hear each other as well).
Wirecast Play is holding at version 6.0.7 at the moment.
Wirecast Studio and Wirecast Pro are now at version 8.

Here’s a feature comparison between Play, Studio and, Pro.

    Hey Craig…

Thanks for the info… I knew you’d be one who would know, if you saw my post.

That’s disappointing, but at least now I can stop wasting my time trying to get it to work. Apparently I was very misinformed about what would work and wouldn’t…. I was told that not only could I use IP cameras, but that IP cameras were the preferred and best way to get video into Wirecast Play. Maybe my info source thought that I was using one of the higher versions of Wirecast, although I was pretty specific about what I had and what I was trying to do.

I think all versions of Wirecast use pretty much the same interface, and while I can see the options that are available only on Pro and Studio versions, at least they are grayed out in the GUI so I know they are not applicable. It’s a bit annoying that although apparently IP cameras don’t work, that the interface still allows me to attempt to add an IP camera and enter its IP address…. countless times…. grrrr. I would have been a lot better off if that hadn’t been an option under “New Wirecast Cam,” and if there hadn’t been an active dialog box to add the IP address. Again… grrr.

I guess I’ll just stick with my previous single camera for this year’s event… maybe I’ll put it on a little motorized pan/tilt head. I know there are tons of ways to do what I was attempting, but they are all at least a little more complicated and a lot more expensive… and this is waaaaaay down on the “importance” list for this event.

    Appreciate the wisdom…

There was a Wirecast Play Studio that has the same IP support as Wirecast Studio. No longer available though.

Wirecast Cam should work with Wirecast Play. That’s an iPhone app though. It can autodetect or us IP address. So there’s nothing wrong with being available. You have to use the app with it. Nothing to do with third party IP cameras though.

IP cameras use the Web Stream plugin. You don’t mention that you tried that that though. That would state Studio though indicating it’s only a Studio option (and there was a Play Studio).

    Thanks Craig…

I’m a victim of my own ignorance with a dash of misinformation (which isn’t a new feeling for me).

So, I guess I’ll just stick with the single webcam. I don’t have multiple iPhones at my disposal (or even one iPhone, I’m an Android guy), and the app looks to be for iOS only.

Fortunately this isn’t a big deal by any stretch… it would have just been gravy to have multiple cameras, so I’m not sweating it.

    Thanks for your help!
