How are you finding live playback from the timeline (both FCPX and Premiere)?

If you’re using Resolve, BMD would be the (only) way to go for output.
It’s just anecdotal but I’ve heard a number of people complain about output issues with BMD cards ranging from latency to jitter, etc. They update their drivers frequently which in and of itself can create a bit of the “chasing your tail” feeling on some issues.

BTW it might be worth looking at Magewell. They seem to be very aggressive in moving their card features forward. Not quite as well known as the others but like so many formerly obscure companies, they seem to be making some headway in the market with a good professional product line.

It’s not clear what NLE you’re using but I always recommend copying the entire card and letting the NLE bring in the clips.

If you were using cassette tapes (if you go back that far) no one would ever recommend opening the case and pulling out the tape.

Always make a complete backup of the card.
If you have a professional modern NLE it will examine the card metadata so the clips will import properly.

Are you thinking about the possible future need for HDR? That might be a factor in output and monitor choices. This would also mean UHD of course.
Are you just delivering broadcast and cable or are any of the online services possible delivery targets?

You may want to look at some AJA solutions for monitoring which will certainly work for HD Broadcast but you’ll be future proofed especially if you’re only doing a major system rebuild every five years.

I had been using Telestream Episode for this. It’s EOL though.
Compressor gets you most of the way but I think the max bit rate is 40mbps.

I think he wants to run a profitable business in the process. I do think BMD is making very smart moves to build an “ecosystem,” quite possibly better than Apple is doing (at least for video).

If you were an aspiring filmmaker with limited financial resources would you chose:
iMovie, Resolve, Avid First?
While iMovie might have been the stepping stone to FCPX, Resolves gets in you in for less money.
And if you buy their upcoming BMPCC4K for $1295 you get the paid version of Resolve included.
Obviously both Apple and BMD want to hook you into a hardware ecosystem where their “real money” is but, at least as far as creatives go, BMD offers a more attractive path.
Apple is iPhone or iPad and iMovie and FCPX but consider the price BMPCC4K w/Resolve is price competitive.

Perhaps Apple should be include FCPX with each computer purchase. Perhaps include it with an iPhone or iPad purchase with the hope it encourages the buyer to get a Mac rather than a PC.

It certainly will be interesting if Adobe gets into hardware.
Otherwise one has to consider that somehow Pixelmator and Affinity are surviving with really low buy prices.
Perhaps smaller companies will still do OK and it’s relative behemoths like Adobe that are having issues.
In fact Adobe had issues with the buy now upgrade and pay model which is why they switched.
Pixelmator’s solution was a new version called Pro requiring a new buy.
Maign KeyFlowPro also was to release a new version requiring a new buy.
It really looks like software that doesn’t go subscription will dispense with upgrades but go to low buy and buy again model.
Others will be buy but require support renewals to keep getting upgrades.
I really don’t see this heading to fewer choices so much as new business models.
The buy once own forever is being done by (some) hardware companies. That’s not shutting out other companies, with other business models though because each model affords a low entry price. That’ll be the common denominator.
