They had no idea what to make of it. Suggested I wait it out and decide if it’s worth it to pay the monthly penalty based on the next update. School programs aren’t given a yearly budget. We apply for funding and when we get it decide what is the priority.

Guessing that the update would come toward the end of last year, I gambled with about $2500 and renewed the AELP. Waste of money. Apple refunded a pro rated amount toward the OS X (+Ilife) yearly AELP. Because they gave everyone the update for free. But they did not refund any of the FCP AELP. Mav was a “new product”; FCP X 10.1 was a “point upgrade.” OK, Apple.

I’ve just been through this need. Export as a self contained QT file. Then download HandBreak. The default looks like this. (if not click the toggle presets button and choose normal):

move the slider to slow

press start and the rest depends on how big your file size is. If its a very long project you might need to select the large file size box. I only needed that once when the movie was 1.5 hours.

HandBreak is used by pro compressionists when needing a high quality mp4. I’m very pleased with the results.

Keep thinking I get it, but not sure.

If only one mono channel is active on the timeline, does FC create a dual mono which is therefore an additive pair that looks like it is peaking on the waveform in the timeline but not on the output meters? Is that a fair summary of what you were both saying?

Our camera records to 4 channels.

We used an option to record the built-in stereo mike to channels 3 and 4. (there is no option to turn it off).

We are also using a 302 mixer and mixing two mike inputs to two outputs.

These were both calibrated to -20 from a 0 tone out from the 302.

Unless I want to mix in some room noise, I disable channels 3 and 4 in FC.

If two channels are active and set to four mono in the inspector then the two channels are mixed to dual mono and therefore even if one is peaking it is attenuated by the mix?

My sample below is set to four mono.

But we have only two of the mono channels active and they each have different waveforms.

The clipping in mono 2 on the timeline is not showing on the meters.

But if I select 2 stereo in the inspector then the two different channels do appear on the meters as well as the clipping. Can I assume this a matches what is happening on the timeline of no other filters are applied?

Should I care about clipping on the timeline channel if downstream I do not show clipping?

I also notice that I can deactivate any of the four channels on the timeline and in the inspector independent of each other. So will deactivation in the timeline mean the final recording does not include the deactivated channels or does the inspector’s channel configuration determine this?

Maybe try exporting the project as a master and play it back in QT and see which it is. Is FC finished rendering. Generally I find that full screen image wise is more accurate. Not sure about audio issues.

I’ve been getting some hangs too since updates to os x 10.9.2 and 10.9.3. USB really?

Yes. That did the trick. I checked the “Large file size.” Set the encode to slow and ended with a 5+gig file that is better than a FCP X share.

I think you need to talk to your boss about the reality of this being a difficult production. You could have the teacher wearing an E6 mike. We are looking at a few hundred bucks plus another 7 or so for the cordless kit. do a search on BHPHOTO for countryman E6 and Sennheiser G3. The other speakers would need to have the mike come to them or vice versa. You could set up a mike on a stand and when someone has a question they could move to it. Or they could raise their hand and a co-host could move to them. You could use a cordless handheld for this. If money was not an issue I would just hire a pro – pay them to set up the shoot and train you on how to use the equipment. Or the idea above works as well. The teacher repeats the questions being asked before answering. Being at a school I deal with this type of request all the time. Everyone thinks capturing a meeting or a presentation in the auditorium is a piece of cake. The visual not so hard; the audio, always a challenge.

That makes sense. Small ranges of the same timeline encoded in handbreak just fine.

I tried QT 7.6.3 and the error message read this is not a QT file even though the icon of the file is the QT symbol.

I tried it in VLC 2.1.4. It would open the shorter one that also opens in QT but not the ones that QT would not open.
