If you open the keyword editor and you have a clip in the browser highlighted and the keyword is showing up in both places and you move the edit point in the film strip, the keyword in the keyword editor will go away. The keyword is specific to the selected range. You would think if the master clip was assigned a keyword that any sub-clip created from it would also have that keyword connected to it.

the start end creation of the selected clip matches the first keyword sub clip not the second one.

What I’m trying to do is be able to edit a project that was created in the studio at another location. All the editing decisions are stored in the XML which can be exported and stored on a flash drive or sent via email or dropbox or whatever. That leaves a copy of the original media. Now either both locations need these files or they need to be sent or accessed somehow. For myself I could bring the original media cards home with me and make a copy on my home system and leave a copy on my work station and then email the xml back and forth as needed. Unless there is a problem with the xml file I should be good to go. 10.1.2 can now read P2 footage natively so even the copy should be pretty fast since it does not need to be transcoded or rewrapped.

But I can’t think of a way to have the original media for hundreds of projects at two locations. The cloud is just too slow.

If we set up some sort of remote access can the media lab computers log into the studio computers and see media on the attached raids?

[Morgan Mendieta] “but when I am at a station it is not feasable to have the trackpad.”

Not trying to argue but a trackpad will work on any mac and FCP X is Mac only so why can’t you use a pad at a station?

I agree that being able to use the keyboard to toggle through layers in the timeline would be very cool. I’m not as fluid as some of the editors here, to say the least, but every session I find myself accidentally with the wrong layer or even area of FC active. Can’t tell you how many times my brain goes why didn’t that work, oh that’s right something just moved in the browser or inspector or in the visual and I’m trying to move in a timeline channel of audio. Most of this is end user error but it happens more than it did in FCP 3-7 for sure. And my instinct at these moments (if command 1-2-3-4 doesn’t work) is to grab the mouse and click on the space/layer I want to work on. Very annoying. I’d also like the active space or layer to be brighter than it currently is. That is greater contrast from the rest of the program.

Have you tried a magic track pad? Ergonomically, it might do the trick for you. It allows you to keep your right hand on the keyboard without moving off it to grab the mouse. It can be lined up with the keyboard and very quickly move the cursor to a clip and tap to engage and your right hand is already typing the next command. also your wrist can remain in keyboard position. I have trouble using a mouse lefty but not the track pad. This means my right and left hands share a lot of the work that otherwise is mostly the right. As far as speed – I think FC is known as the fastest NLE for non-complex projects even by those that don’t like it for other reasons.

    Version 10.1.2?

You are putting the project in an event in a library … right?

You have updated the library to the new version?

Make sure your import location setting has room.

If so, I’d trash FC preferences.

And if that doesn’t work, close FC, trash the FC preference files and redownload the app from the app store.

[Robin S. Kurz] “[Craig Alan] “So why exactly would you prefer proxies to be in the library?”

Imagine having an MBP with a small amount of local/internal storage, but you want to take your footage with you to edit without having to lug around external drives for the the original media. If you have the original/optimized media on external storage but just the proxies locally, you can edit on the road with the proxies and reconnect to the original/optimized media for output when finished and back at the studio. Have done it and absolutely LOVED it. :)”

I thought of this. But you don’t need any of the other files, now stored out of the library, like cache? There are times I want to take a project home with me and it’s been a bit of a chore.

And if you were editing in optimized or original media can you go back forth those and proxy?

If you put the library with just proxies in the cloud like dropbox or whatever – would this work and limit how long it takes to upload? Although we will edit projects in the studio we will also have a lab for teaching editing and it would be nice if students could use the projects they are working on in the studio.

I see, now, where you are coming from James. If you read the storage-location-modify-settings-window carefully you will see that you can set a NEW place to store an import but leave-all-the previous-imports-in previous locations. You can always consolidate the bunch to any location.

So, yes, a two-step process or actually a three-step process because otherwise your next import will now be stored in the last location you selected unless you switch the location back again.

I guess Apple has decided you would want all these media types in one place or another. To be fair, when you choose anything outside of the library, FC creates alias files to point to your selected location.

So why exactly would you prefer proxies to be in the library? (I’m sure there would be times when you would want these media types in different locations, but not sure of the pros and cons). Is “managed” media, that is media in the library, faster than using references? I thought keeping the library small makes it faster?

But, all that said, I think? this would work to do what you want:
    1) import everything into the library.
    2) change the storage-location-modify-settings-window to your preferred external location.
    3) in the consolidate window deselect proxy media.
That should move all media out of the library except proxy media.

    Kinda of weird workflow though.

If this is for sharing purposes just leave all media in an external location and export and import xml files to your colleagues. Am I missing something?

Ok Bill, have to disagree. I can have students doing basic rough cuts with about a one minute explanation. When they are ready, another 60 seconds to learn to adjust audio levels. Another for titles. Etc. It’s way easier than iMovie. And after I have showed one student I can have them teach each other. Now $300 may be a bit much for non-pros. For the most part the advanced stuff stays out of your way unless you know how to use it or unless you go looking. Now students that knew FCP 7 do have some trouble with the connected clips and other replacements for tracks. But they all like the magnetic features of the primary. And for the most part not too many used more than two visual tracks and maybe three tracks of audio – dialog, music, sound effects. It’s a great program for beginners. With lots of room to grow.

[Jeremy Garchow] “No. You made it seem like they developed FCPX to be as it was and everything after that has been one big bug fix, and I am saying that that was the stepping stones to get where we are today. You said they created a ton of development work for themselves, those were your words.”

Changing how media is organized in FC is not a bug fix; it’s a change in direction/design. And yes I think that doing that and keeping all existing projects in working order must have been a lot of work and I think they did a great job. I do not think they designed FCP X 10.0 with a media management system as a stepping stone for another. But they have changed it. And it works.

I think it may work so well that what was a weakness may become a competitive edge over Avid and CC. Combining flexible storage options with the most advanced metadata organization and creation is very powerful and needed in a world of massive amounts of data.

But there is nothing new about “libraries.” I have a 10.7 partition that I can boot into that still has an iPhoto library folder that you can right click and “show the package contents” which when revealed includes things like an original media folder etc. You don’t need Mavericks for a library to work. But Apple has really been pushing everyone to stay current. And considering the OS versions and updates and most other apps as well have been free and effortless to install, I think they are winning that war.

Stay current and reboot when we tell you to.
