“It’s a different way of thinking about projects. What’s a project without the media? It’s a useless metadata file really. A collection of edit decisions without the media does not a video make! So keeping projects with the media makes a lot of sense when you think about it. ”

When video was shot on tape, it made sense to keep the small project file on the system drive. The tape served as the archive and the project file could after reimporting the media recreate the edits/timeline if the digital media got corrupted or the media drive died.

Now u need to back up completely digital media.

I like to keep copies of my p2 cards in their own folders and then import them into FC assigned locations. Then the entire project has to be backed up on a different physical drive.

I wonder if I had the original card copies and just the project file if my projects could be brought back as they were. That would keep the back up archives smaller.

Reset preferences in Final Cut Pro X 10.1.2 or later

Quit Final Cut Pro X.
Hold down the Command and Option keys while reopening Final Cut Pro X. A window will appear asking “Do you want to delete preferences?”
Click Delete Preferences. This command removes the preference files and resets Final Cut Pro X to default settings.

Try this:

Highlight the library in FC.

In the inspector

Storage locations> modify settings

and choose where you want the media/render files and FC backups to be in the finder

then choose ‘consolidate’ and run it.

if that does not workwork then try consolidating all to the library.

You can always change it.

Here are two looks at a finder copy of the same P2 card

These are not clips in a folder. It is the contents of the P2 card – exactly how it appears in the P2 card.
The import window sees this folder exactly as it sees a P2card – it sees it as clips with metadata attached.

They appear in the import window of FC with all their metadata intact.

They even copy back to a P2 card, which then can be read by a P2 cam

The outer wrapper is different and the camera does initially show an error warning, but then it opens fine in the clip window of the camera.
Once it loads in the clip window the camera no longer has a problem with the wrapper and in fact will continue to record onto the P2 card if there is room.
In other words it rewraps it back to Panasonic’s default.

Early on I had a situation where FCP X would not read the files from a particular camera because it was shot at a frame rate not supported by FC. I copied it back to a P2 card then loaded into a P2 camera and then played out the clips SDI HD to a KIPRO. It was recorded in apple pro res 422 which of course FC could import. There I lost all metadata and clip divisions – it read now as one big clip with the date of the copy.

My concern with a FC camera archive is that it is wrapped in a way that might not be read in the future. I don’t think that panasonic will stop supporting their file structure but Apple might.

If we are talking about FCP legacy, you need to add the Sony VX1000. That pretty much was the game changer in terms of Prosumerism.

Those options sound great.

So many of the options with these services overlap.

My problem with Vimeo pro exclusively is I don’t see stills on Vimeo. Even photographers using the site – the stills will be displayed as a video. Smugmug has a nice shopping cart services built in that will help with sales and future sales.

So maybe just smugmug and vimeo?

Thanks Ryan. Starting to feel more comfortable. I like the shopping cart services/printing services that smugmug provides. Don’t want lower resolution backups so that is not a variable.

Do you think smugmug alone would do the trick as a host site (along with vimeo) or is smug mug too limited as a homesite and I really need all three?
