I called AJA and a tech support rep said none of their units help mirror the desktop image on a TV. This confused me because I thought that was exactly one of their functions–to connect a monitor when editing in FCP. Now mirroring the desktop may not be the same as viewing the viewer/canvas.

24-bit I gather.
Is the audio quality really good or is it worth adding a sound devices mixer to the chain for its quality preamp?

Not sure I get the difference between a transcode and a conversion. If the kipro can input HDV playback from a Sony HDV deck and record it as pro res, isn’t that a transcode/conversion? I gather the difference is hardware vs. software conversion?

In any case, the Sony HDV deck HVRM15AU has S-Video Output, Component Output (rca x 3), Analog Audio Output, Composite Output (BNC x1). And firewire output which is labeled HDV/DV. What’s the best connection or would the AJA HD10AVA be in order?

The kipro is listed as 7.5 lbs
Bh photo sales rep told me the KI-EXO-R0 Exo-Skeleton weighs less than 2 lbs.
The canon HV30 is under 2 lbs with battery and accessories added.

So I thought I was within the limits of the Matthews M25 Tripod, which is rated at 15 lbs.

But my experience is that some loads are balanced well and some are not, thus straining these lighter weight video heads.

What battery do you recommend?
The batteries listed at BHphoto (Bescor) are all belt types with a 6’ 4pin xlr cord to the unit. I guess I could Velcro them to the tripod, but if put down by the feet should not increase the weight load. Do you recommend something else? I see they weigh as much as 4lbs.

If we do add the 4 lb battery with the Sony Z7u (5.3lbs plus battery and accessories) this takes us over the capacity of our Manfrotto 503HDV 351MVB2K, which is rated at 17.8 lbs.

Not in the market for a higher end tripod so I need to keep the battery weight down, mounted low or off the tripod.

Hi TY,

No need. Just don’t have enough for all the teams. Plus the students need to earn some trust before we start loaning out gear worth that much. There are times I want to loan out a quick run and gun 1 person shoot. Plus on small cams with mini ports, I like a secure way of connecting the mikes. If I’m using a cordless transmitter like the sennheiser G2, I skip the xlr adapter. But with the sound devices, the cable is long enough to stress the small port. When we shoot with higher end cams, pd170, canon xl2, Z7u, never have used an xlr adapter. The juiced link has great reviews on BHphoto but I trust your eval. What do you hate about it?

I tell the kids all the time to learn how their voices get recorded and adjust accordingly. We watch listen and give feedback after every shoot. And I follow what you are saying about the mike characteristics. So I guess it’s a trade off. No proximity effect and fewer drops off as talent swings the mike toward and from different speakers, but then you’re in danger of picking up the distractions around you. But it might be an advantage if everyone could learn to get it close to the mouth and not worry as much about individual tonal differences. I plan to switch to a camera that will allow them to monitor the sound directly from the cam. Unfortunately, it is a HDV cam. (Canon HV30/40) I remember reading that you said that HDV has 5x the compression as CD quality where as SD DV has slightly better than CD quality? Is this correct?

For starters, try maxing out the ram in your mbp. crucial has a scanner that will give you the specs of your ram. or owc explains it pretty well too. or 18004memory. You can at least double it to 4 gigs for under $120.

You can try a sata array with one of these: https://eshop.macsales.com/item/Sonnet%20Technology/SATAIIPROE34/?utm_source=diglloyd-mpg. faster than firewire and does not use the same port if you’re using firewire cam or deck.

If your system was faster once, I’d look at how full your media drive is. Maybe back up what you need and wipe it clean. Try diskwarrior on system drive or even a fresh install of all.

No question a Mac pro will be faster and stay current longer. New models are expected for both mbp and mac pros. i’d stall with some upgrades till then.

the 302 has more features and i think is a great value. bhphoto $1300. The mixpre has only mic in/line out levels.
