So it can do an incremental back up and take much less time than a full back up of say a FC library and will delete things that have been deleted but where the deleted data was still takes up the space on the tape? Is that it? I know on tape based camcorders you could overwrite though not particularly recommended. I though I had read that some LTOs could do overwrites?

Anyone use cloud based solutions or is this just too slow and or expensive?

Did u try a sync by creating a multicam clip? If not, worth a try.

I usually allow T & A to complete before I start editing. If there turns out to be a problem with the original media being imported, before the edit is a good time to find out. I would close all apps other than FC and let the BG tasks finish if they can. Then check your BU folder and see what’s there.

I know FC says it can continue BG tasks in the BG but at least on my computers that means it pauses the BG task until I stop what I am doing.

By default projects are in an event that also contains the media.
You have to decide to create a new event and then create a new project in that new event to end up with separate events for the two elements.
Though when you open an event, projects are listed separately from the media with header labels – sort of like auto-folders within the event. You can also add actual folders in an event but for the most party not needed since adding keywords gives you very sophisticated ability to sort components as you like. I don’t think you can delete an event’s box/star icons. you can delete an event, but the contents of it will be deleted as well. It’s not my favorite design element of FCP X. I don’t see any upside compared to just a simple folder structure within a master folder which I would call a “project”. But its not all that different in terms of function and i’ve gotten used to it.

I think you solved the problem by reimporting the media. It sounds like you moved the media to a new location somehow and/or FC just lost the path to the media. What I have learned is, if the media is still on the Mac or media drive somewhere, you can relink to it. And within FC, you can highlight the library and then move the footage where ever you prefer by looking in the inspector and first use “storage location> modify settings” and then ” in library>consolidating” and select the finder or media drive location where you would like the imported media/cache/fc back- ups to be kept.
Sometimes the links get corrupted on their own and sometimes end users mess themselves up. Either way, if the media still exists, it can be fixed.

What is PRP? The incremental backup that does not overwrite is similar to CCC incremental backup with safety net but obviously will take up more room if you can’t overwrite.

Can you delete stuff from an LTO to regain space? I could do the incremental back ups that dos not overwrite and then when all is finished delete all after a fresh back up of final version.

If the library won’t open how do access this “flexolibrary”. There are a percentage of Macs that have thunderbolt issues where the drive will freeze and the Mac will reboot and sometimes on the units that have this problem I will end up with corrupted libraries that won’t open.

It’s just a form of redundancy, but I have had it pay off several times in two different ways. I have had libraries/media become corrupted and the back up card saved the day.

And I have had final cut not be able to read the media that was reported as successfully imported into the event. Then when i have tried to relink using the card copy, got a report that the card copy could not be read either. This has happened a number of times and the remedy was this: I copied the card copy back onto a P2 card. I put the card back in a P2 cam. Got a report that the card could not be read (not sure of the language used but that was the gist). Switched to playback mode in the camera and the camera rewrapped the card so that the footage appeared as clips. switched back to record mode and no more error message. Reimported into FC and all was well. Without the card copy … goodbye footage.

So my guess is that the card was not imported completely even though FC reported it was. And apparently the camera actually wraps the card in the playback mode rather than the record mode. But I’m making this part up and don’t really know how media cards work but its logical since the card is reformatted in playback mode when you erase the clips. You can delete clips instead but generally its suggested that between shoots – reformat .

New to this. In the days of tape based camcorders and players it was highly recommended to have a head cleaning once per year. Does the same apply to LTO drives?

Also considering a move to LTO back up solutions. Does LTO software allow for incremental back ups? Not sure I can afford buying both hard drive based incremental back ups and LTO.

Currently looking at about 15TB of active projects of video maybe another 2 TB of stills. Moving to 4 x 6TB raid 5 for media drive and need to do incremental backups. Once completed would like to store archived back up of each project and delete them from the media drive leaving more headroom for new projects and faster speeds for on going editing.

Not sure of which brand is the best bang for the buck but regardless would like a solution that is not proprietary – meaning I do not wish to be stuck with files that are dependent on a single brand of drive. You never know what’s around the corner in this fast changing world of media.

Does LTO back ups require redundancy – that is at least two back ups per project?

Thanks Mark. Food for thought. If you were to start fresh today what brand of LTO drive would you buy? Do you use LTO for incremental backups on active projects and if so what software do you use to do this?

My debate is that $5000 for just a drive that has a two year warranty and then additional expense for the tapes which need redundancy gets expensive given the amount of media I need to back up. that said if it becomes a firm investment in the future as opposed to every five years or less making new back ups to new drives then it would be worth it.

If I could use LTO for incremental backups that would definitely help me decide to go with the preferred LTO. To use one set of back ups on drives for incremental backups and another on LTO for archiving finished projects would be too expensive for me.
