are those “floor candelabras” fixed near the cyc wall? Are they omni? Can they be masked/skirted and/or dimmed? Or thrown away?
Can you blacken the b.g. in post or is this a live feed? Do you get tech rehearsals to experiment? Do you have a grid to hang your lights? Is the cyc wall black? You have lekos so if black doesn’t work you might be able to talk them into a subtle patterned b.g. using gobo patterns. Or use a digital projector and use the cyc wall as a screen. Bring a broadcast monitor and run a feed from the mixer. I assume the tiered risers will help block any light falling near the floor of the cyc? Egg crates help. Use the fresnels for the back lights. What type of DOF can those five cams achieve? With 5 cams you are going to need to see the results for each one and adjust your angles and settings. How are the cams mounted? Are they just on tripods aimed up at the riser? Cranes would help.IMO when time and money are limited you should go with what works not necessarily what is preconceived.

LEDs are getting a lot better in terms of temperature control and have filtered into the professional workflow. But they are still quite expensive if you stick to the famous manufactures – though they’re cheaper to run. The kit below is great for very soft even lighting and it even-outs skin tone — in other words fairly idiot proof and talent looks good under it. However it may not be the look you are after. With Fresnels you can get more modeling and can go either hard or soft. Daylight Fresnels are expensive. HMIs a more common choice for daylight temp and greater power. Expensive. The kit below does not come with bulbs so buy the daylight temp. Plus you still need a back light but your reflector could do the job there. You might just want to wait for the magic hour and get what you need with out artificial light. Scout the location the day before and see what different locations and angles bring to the table. Take lots of shots with talent and you have the whole night and day to review your footage and decide where to set up the next day if you even need to. I’d bring a broadcast monitor with me and a way to shield the screen from the sun so you can really see what you are getting.

Would having HD-SDI out allow you to record in higher level codec’s than what is provided in the c300? In other words, would future versions of external recorders future proof this and other current 1080 cams? I have by way of a much weaker example gotten more life out of HDV cams by using HD-SDI out to a Ki Pro.
Or are there limitations to the imaging chips and HD-SDI standards?

I have mixed feelings here. If the icon is still active in the material world then its symbolism is intuitive and depending on the design not superfluous. If, on the other hand, it is anachronistic then the design may feel both dated and clunky. I agree that to add a graphic border around a digital calendar as if were meant to hang on a cork wall is ugly. On the other hand, the Manila paper folder icon to me is the best icon of a digital folder yet developed. I suppose you could cut the folder icon and just leave the rotating triangle after or before the name and it would take less space. But we even call it a folder. We don’t call it a wall calendar. Ive is an incredible designer but I’m not sure he is a software designer. It will be interesting to see. Should we still be calling it a reel and use a filmstrip graphic to symbolize media? NO. Try to never break up a clip. IOW, if the clip has audio, leave it connected to the clip. Your life will be easier. Once you break up a clip, there is no correlation between the two at all.

Ah yes the monthly cloud bill. Taking their cue from cable and cell companies. The problem here: in education, we tend to get funding as yearly one shot deals that may or may not recur. The rationale to buy certain equipment in order to offer specific training to students is that that is what the industry demands. When in fact industries are moving targets and the only important thing to learn is how to learn and the basic principals behind the need.

I’d like credit. But feel free. I too am an educator.
The best deal right now is AVID MC – $300 and good for 4 years of free updates. Now AVID might go under and MC is a slightly tougher learning curve. People might complain about the dated interface, but no one will accuse them of not being professional. It is cross platform. It plays well with others.I chose FCP X for my classes because they are HS students. However i got 10 copies of MC so I can have serious students learn it too. Plus if I change my mind based on what happens to FCP X, I can switch over to MC. I miss FCP 7. But I have no doubts that FCP X is plenty powerful enough for the type of videos that are done in schools, and events, and weddings, and industrials, and and and. (Please put back multiple tracks! They just work.) And a fast turn around would be welcome.
My only regrets was possibly not going with PPro. But given your post maybe I made the right decision. Not sure how they could just up their rates that radically after institutions bought in. What happens when the term expires? Can you just continue to use the non-updated software until you can afford to renew? That’s the case with FCP X as far as I know. But the renewal isn’t 600% higher either. Not a smart move on Adobe’s part. They have an opportunity here to take over FCP 7’s share of the pro world. Why make it hard for schools to offer it?

phantom power, mic input, or line level. great metering. great headphone amp. great preamps. filters, limiters. the only quality mixer that can be mounted under your camera with or without a tripod.
it will significantly improve your audio by being able to turn the cam’s preamp way down. calibrates with cam with standard tone. Sound Devices customer service is great. The build quality is great.
