  • Should I buy a c300?

Posted by Raphael Rogers on March 6, 2013 at 5:41 pm

Hey guys, so I’m a filmmaker in LA. This year I did two features on the 5D and a number of other things. I’m finding it’s harder and harder to get hired with just the 5D. Though I primarily just do my own stuff, I do need to pay rent by shooting and editing other people’s work. That being said, I rented out the c100 and shot with it. Loved it aside from missing focus on a couple of shots because of not having the good viewfinder and having the bulk of the ninja on top of it. When I shoot stuff it’s often just me alone, not a big fan of depending on others. So I figured the c300 is perfect for this. My question is, is the c300 still being rented? Will I be able to defray some of my costs by doing that? Also, I looked at the scarlet and stuff as I’ve shot stuff on the epic and I find the footage and the size and battery life to just be annoying. Am I being too picky that I just loved how easy the c300 was? Also am I crazy for wanting the c300 over the c100 just because of those couple things? Thanks!

I’ll make it short because I’m running out the door to head to a location (if you have any specific questions I’ll be happy to answer later)…

But in short… of all the scads of cameras I’ve owned through the years, the C300PL is my favorite. Ever.

I cannot say enough good things about this camera.

Raphael… I looked at your reel, or at least a bit of it.

Very beautiful stuff, very cinematic. You’ll take to the C300 like a duck to water. It’d be in good hands with you… you’d really like it and I’m sure you’d turn out great images.

Thanks Terry, really appreciate it! I’m ready to graduate past the 5d!

The C300 is great camera. All your lenses will move right over to it. Plus by not buying one sooner you saved $2K with the instant rebate. Good timing!

Canon MIGHT have an additional financing deal going on, it’d be worth asking your Canon rep.

We never lease any equipment (except our vehicles, which makes sense tax-wise), but we are leasing our C300PL.

We were just gonna plop down the cash for it like we do with other gear… but when we called to order it we found out that in addition to the $1000 rebate (which I guess is now $2K), Canon was offering a 24-month lease with a $1 buyout at the end… and the sum of the lease payments totals the exact same amount as the purchase price.

So basically it’s free-interest money. We couldn’t find a down side to it, so that’s what we’re doing.

Nice reel Raphael! If this were a year ago I’d say get the c300 for sure – but with the the F5 available for just a couple of grand more that’s where you should be headed – you’ll be future-proofed with 2k and 4k and raw etc. Your work is too good to lose out to someone with a Red etc. I’d hire you but not with your c300…

F5 is a very promising camera, for sure… haven’t used one or seen one with my bare eyeballs yet, but it certainly is getting good buzz.

BUT… if price is a factor, that “couple grand more” is a bit deceiving. By the time you add a viewfinder and the media recorder (if you want 4K), the price is a lot closer to twice that of the C300.

Exactly. The F5 looks good but for me I don’t need 4K and won’t until 4K is as available as HD. My prodictions don’t have the shelf life like narrative does. No sense having to deal with the storage and computer upgrades. I think the C300 will still be around for a couple more years.
