I just had that happen helping my son import media from a Canon consumer cam into Imovie. Just wouldn’t see the camera nor deal with the folder containing the clips . But we were able to import and optimize the individual clips from a finder copy but only wen the clips were selected not the folder as a whole. KInd of the opposite of what I have learned to do with say P2 footage – leave the entire folder structure from the card intact. Hopefully this will be fixed in the next version of both apps.

Thanks Jeremy. I’m just suggesting that the codec be defined within FCP X. Optimize media upon Import as Apple ProRes 422 or as Apple ProRes 422 (proxy). Export to YouTube as ….

Your link article is the type of language I’d prefer within the FCP X interface.

Hi Bernard, No question audio problems ruin more shoots than the visual elements and less can be done to fix them in post. Always do a sound check with your gear before each production session. Not just monitoring but playback too.

I’ve sometimes played stuff back that sounded awful or silent but found that playing back through just one of the channels saved the day. Check your camera to see if there are different play out options. Do the cam’s audio meters indicate a stronger voice type meter reading than you are seeing with the nothing but noise track?

PS these guys know way more than me but I’ve had this happen before on a canon cam.

If stored with charge, it is possible that when you return to use the battery there may still be some charge left in the battery, therefore it will enable you to use it right then and there. Also, by keeping some charge in the battery, it will require you to “cycle” the battery fewer times until it reaches its peak charge. If you store them with no charge, you will have to “cycle” the battery multiple times until it reaches its peak charge.
An eneloop battery may remain up to 75% charged if not used for up to 3 years.

I use them for cordless mikes and SD mixers. I just charge them after they run out of gas and use with two sets for each device and a bunch of chargers. If they’ve been plugged in overnight I unplug them the next day. I’m not overly careful about all the rules (the above suggests that letting them run to empty may not be good idea -though it does say store that way) but my audio gear stays running and I have less complaints about performance than with regular batteries. And previous gen re-chargables. I used to run out of batteries which was a pain. We are using 4-6 mixers 5 days a week for about 5-6 hours a day. For the cordless mikes I just charge them when they show 1/2 full. For critical shoots I start with all devices at full.

This ir right on the money. For simple editing. X is a good match and will continue to work with latest OS. FCP 7 is getting old. It’s slower and no on-going support. PP is fine and being updated. But it’s a monthly bill. Any fairly recent Imac will get the job done. Great machines. As I read through this thread it occurs to me that much of the confusion is generated by Apple deciding to define things with we-do-it-for-you vocab. “Optimized” – how about just telling us what the default import codec is given the original media type. Even export options are presented as “destinations” – don’t mind their suggestions, but tell me what codec it will export as. Yes I can ‘get info and find out. The inspector gives you clues but sometimes refers to the original media. The whole thing seems confusing. There was a need to simplify the process but a professional app needs to leave the final decision to the editor. How about for exports listing the codec with a list of destinations that would be a good fit for that codec. You know rather than “Apple devices.”

I agree with the need. FCPX likes to keep things in one window and bring up what you need through filters. So you can always add different tags (key words) to a clip. I’m so used to having multiple windows in all apps and able to drag between them but X does offer a very powerful filter system. Lets see where version 2 takes us. Been a while since any major new features.
