    jest jk’ing 😉

[GaryAlan] “what mouse allows horiz scroll wheel? i have the mac wireless mighty and it lacks a lot of resetting functions. for some reason mac thinks people only want to launch apps with mouse buttons.”
maybe your mouse insn’t configured properlly?? my mighty mouse allows me to scroll in all directions,, even diagonally when the window permits..

I know what you mean about it being sometimes overwhelming with all the different aps and all the different shortcut but.. the apps I use often,, I remember what they are,, and they do increase the speed of my workflow considerably,, not at first while I learn them,, but once memorized,, it makes a huge difference

[GaryAlan] “A shame the scroll wheel is just sitting there to unly scroll tracks vertically.”

and horizontally if you have the functionality in your mouse..

I use shift-z alot to snap back the timeline to full view,, I also use the keyboard more than the mouse,, but try this one,, use the zoom tool short cut (z), then use the zoom tool with the mouse (lasso the chunk you want to look at, hit (a) to get back your selection tool, make your edit/adjustment/… then hit shift-z (side by side so only one hand needed) to snap back to full timeline view 😉

or if you only want to zoom out a step or 2 hit z,z to open the zoom out tool.

this should help keep one hand on the mouse,, and one on the keyboard for every one who went to school back in the ’30’s ‘grunt grunt’

  • for some reasons project files can become corrupt if sent unstuffed(zipped 😉

  • yup that works to,, aslong as the file is locked into a stuffit file or zip file,, or one of a few other archive formats..

but i’d stick with the more common zip or stuff it formats

    what length is your project??

  • Another possible solution: use stuffit. I used to do alot of protools work,, and with protools,, unless the project file was stuffed before e-mailing/FTP posting, it wouldnt re-open. After figuring this one out i stuff all project files (FCP included) i send, and haven’t had any issue since.

I’d check to see if the PSD or something else has a field dominance that differes from the project…

Also,, make sure that every option has a check beside it in your “render all” drop down.
    (sequence > render all)
I’ve been caught on this one before,, i believe “full” was off,, every thing played back fine,,there was no red/green/orange bar along the timeline… but would notice certain items shifting until i re-rendered making sure the entire list was checked… I think the indicator colour for it is only slightly different from the normal grey that is always there.. so it can be easy to miss.

I have done some feature length encodes from FCP to DVDSP.. I however use compressor to make the mpeg-2. for a 1hour programme it can take me 3hours’ish on my 17″ 2.16MBP 2gigRam If I export using compressor straight from FCP (I am told compressor re-renders the entire project.. thus eats up time..) It takes far less time if i first export a quicktime reference movie,, then open compressor and import the reference movie.
