    Thanks Richard!

[Richard Crowley] “Does the receiver have any indication of the signal strength of the radio signal?”

The receiver indicates only if it’s either receiving or not receiving a signal. There are no levels of signal.

[Richard Crowley] “Does the RF signal shut off (and “squelch” the receiver) when you unplug the microphone?”

The RF signal in the receiver remains on even when I unplug the microphone from the transmitter. But it goes off when I turn off the transmitter.

Is it possible that the receiver has a noise gate that’s why it’s so silent when mic is unplugged? Though I think this is impossible for this mic system at this price point. What do you think?

Will try to connect the lav mic directly to my GH5 and Zoom H5 and see what happens.

Thank you, Rick! But diffusion material will cut down the light intensity. We’re working as pro-bono volunteers in our church with limited budget. The lights that we have are not strong enough to lit the subject from afar with a diffuser in the middle. I guess we need to convince them to buy more powerful lights.

Chris Wright, you completely solved my problem. Thank you very much!

By the way, what do 90 and 50 mean here?

[Chris Wright] “this is why native white balancing rec. 709 used to be 90 but log is 50, also known as white balance compression”

Thanks Bouke. I completely understand what you mean and I agree with you. I just want to know what most others are doing, specifically in short films (usually low budget) and TV commercials (usually of higher budget).

    Thanks Gary!

Not talking about the noise or log this time, what do most professionals do to expose/light a night time or late afternoon scene? Do they light it so the subject is at optimal exposure and then turn down exposure in post?

I see a couple of day to night effects tutorial on Youtube. So I am having the impression that cinematographers light the subject at perfect IRE so they get the skin tones right, then adjust exposure later in post. What do you think? Thanks!

    Thanks Richard!

The problem is there are not many options here in Manila so we’re stuck to purchasing it online without personally doing any test. We’re pretty much stuck to watching reviews on Youtube.

In the review, the JK MIC-J 044 sounds better than the 017. So I might go that route. Although it sounds a little bit noisier (not sure though if it’s self noise or background noise).

I also have another low budget option which is this: https://www.audiophile.ph/lavaliermicrophones?product_id=246

Another cow leader pointed me to this lav mic. But I still need to purchase an adapter so I can test it on my transmitter. Waiting for my ordered Rode SC3.

Below is the link to the exact model that I bought. It’s more expensive than the one at the K&F website. The case is all metal so it’s heavy. I wonder why it’s not in the K&F website. The seller in Amazon is K&F Concept.

I followed your advise for the test. I placed the transmitter and mic inside several layers of clothes in my closet. I listened to my headphones and the noise was the same as when I did the test in my bedroom. Now, when I unplugged the microphone like you suggested, there’s absolutely no sound. I mean it’s like you turned off the transmitter. I’m not sure if this means that the transmitter has extremely low noise or if the system shuts off when mic is removed. I tried plugging a 1/8 plug and it’s still very quiet. What do you think?

Yes, will definitely let you know.

By the way, this is the lav mic system that I bought. It’s more expensive than the one at K&F website. The build quality is better because of it’s all metal body. I wonder why this is not in their website.

I think this will allow that lav mic to be attached to my transmitter. Will buy this first.
