The best way I’ve ever heard it put was that the client owns the video, not the tape it’s on. If they want a master tape, bill them the reasonable amount for the videocassette and the time it takes to dub it. Don’t try to screw them, just try to recoup what’s fair. If they hire out this kind of work frequently, they’ll be used to a duplication charge.

Thanks a bunch. I had originally been getting weird errors about mixing DF/NDF time code, so I’d changed my capture preset…that apparently didn’t fix things entirely, it just made the error go away before capturing.
I created my own presets for capture settings and device control settings, quit FCP, started up again, and batched some footage. It appears to be working now. Thanks for the prompt response.

I never bumped up to Premiere Pro on our DVStorm2 boxes here, I switched to Mac. But AE has always worked well, I’ve got 6.5 on those machines now for legacy work. I looked into getting AE preview out thru the Canopus card, but it was like $300 to buy the plugin from Canopus. It works for free on my dpsVelocity at home, so I didn’t care for the idea of having to pay for it here. I’d try it with an OHCI firewire card instead…it should work automatically. The only downside to that is if your DV deck is connected to the Canopus card instead of the OHCI card, then you have to switch cables to get the AE preview.
On my Mac it works out the Firewire connection just fine.

The Adobe Updater downloaded an AE7 Hotfix on my Windows machine a couple of days ago…you might want to double check and see if you’re up to date. Perhaps they’ve addressed an issue related to your problem.

I believe that DV and DVCAM are the same animal, with DVCAM having a faster tape speed. Of course, now that I’ve said that, someone will come along with a correction 🙂
I used to use Serious Magic “Ultra” for keying DV, but I hated stepping out of my normal workflow in addition to using tons of disk space on 32-bit AVIs for my keyed clips. Then the AE 6 with Keylight came out, and I’ve never looked back. Don’t get me wrong…Ultra is amazing at what it does. But I’ve pulled some very nice keys from properly (and improperly) lit DV footage.
Just play around with it and you’ll get the hang of it. Just yesterday I picked up a project that had been on hold for a while, an instructional video with a little girl in front of animated vector cartoon animals. Having had more practice with Keylight I was able to improve dramatically on the Keylight settings from when I originally started the project. It just takes lots of experimenting.

You might want to download Toon Boom Studio and try it out at http://www.toonboom.com. A lot of the Flash toons you see out there are produced in Toon Boom.

I’ve always taken files from our print artist and separated each path object to its own layer; AE interprets the layers, but not the individual paths. That’s likely your problem.

Sounds shady to me. I got my AE7 thru the Adobe store.
