We were able to make do with the weights included in the kit, just barely. I would agree with Craig that you’d want a vest rig for a camera of this size and weight; in fact, even with the vest rig, you will feel the pain after a day of shooting a stabilizer rig of any sort! They just make you use all those little muscles you don’t normally use. Owie.

We use a Merlin with vest rig with our EX-1, and have achieved fantastic results with it. Naturally the hardest part about any of these stabilizers is the initial setup. Maybe that’s why they called it the Merlin, because there’s a bit of wizardry involved in finding the camera’s sweet spot!
While the EX-1 is right at the ragged edge of what the rig is designed to handle, it does work exactly as we hoped.

It sounds like you need to check out the Sony XDCAM Transfer application. It allows you to export to multiple formats, as well as send to FCP. From your post I’m not sure if you’re using it already.

I’d put software such as the Transfer Tool, Clip Browser 2.0, and the Log & Transfer Plugins for the respective NLEs…basically anything available from Sony.
I don’t know if there’s a workaround, but Mac doesn’t like to write to NTFS drive partitions. That would limit you to smaller FAT32 partitions, if I remember correctly. You’d need to do your homework on that one.

Clint, so you are saying Sony makes an actual USB connection device that is separate from the camera?
Yep, it’s the SBAC-US10 reader:
Sony’s site says around $280 but we got ours from B&H – one as part of their EX-1 Accessory Kit, and one for $250 as a separate purchase.

I haven’t tried to bring the clips over from the camera via USB, because I like to keep the cameras in the hands of the shooters, but I have to say that the USB card reader from Sony is FAST. Worth the $250 in the time you save, if you ask me. We bought an additional reader so we wouldn’t have to go through the time-consuming process you describe with our second Mac system.

Definitely native files. Look down a few threads to the EX Codec Business thread, and you’ll see what happens if you deliver the wrong files to an editor. Keep the BPAVs (combine them if you wish, using Clip Browser) and be ready to kick out files ready for any supported editing system at the drop of a hat.

I agree with Don. Isn’t it amazing that, wherever you go in this communications business, that we have to struggle so hard to maintain communication? 🙂
One question I had as far as busting up a clip. I don’t see a way to make a new clip (file) from a subclip using Clip Browser. But if I throw a Quicktime-wrapped file into FCP, select the portion I want to isolate, and Export XDCAM, it’ll make new clips for me?
