I just got an email from Bogen/Manfrotto touting some new still camera heads, so perhaps they’re about to or have recently announced some video kit, too…
As for me, I love our Sachtler FSB-6 head on carbon sticks with the single-lever legs.

Just out of curiosity…did you budget for lights? Are you shooting on a $100 tripod? Editing software is part of the equation. That, or if you’re going to end up downconverting to an HDV signal, you should have just bought a cheaper camera to free up money for a real editing solution.
We have a copy of FCE floating around in our office, and nobody uses it because the logging features are so deficient. It’s NOT a professional app, and we knew that…we got it for really simple one-off stuff for our non-tech people to use if they wanted to. Even they prefer to just use Final Cut Pro.
I don’t think your research necessarily led you in the right direction; I haven’t tried this myself, but I think you’d get better results by using the Calibrated Software codecs (which are cheap) to use XDCAM EX files in Final Cut Express. Maybe I’ll try that Monday 🙂

Cool beans, Don…were the Snow Leopard / XDCAM Transfer issues intermittent, or has Sony “fixed the glitch” now?
We’re still running Studio 2 on our machines as well. Nothing earth-shattering to make us declare we need to charge forward with all the upgrades. Many times the ROI on all these upgrades is questionable, to say the least…and with all the software used to equip a modern NLE workstation, it would be a continual process!

I don’t know the particulars since I haven’t had to work my way through such a rescue, but I’ve read here on the forum that you can either repair this folder or gather the clips to a new folder using the Clip Browser. Maybe someone with the experience can point you to a more specific process within the app, or you can start experimenting with it yourself.
Make sure you download the latest Clip Browser version from Sony. It wasn’t always capable of this sort of thing.

At this very point in time, I think the answer is still very much no until some XDCAM Transfer bugs get fixed in regard to Snow Leopard compatibility. I don’t think my information is out of date. There were some fixes published for SxS compatibility in MacBooks but I think the transfer app problem persists.
My experience in the past has taught me to not mess with an NLE that works fine. 🙂

Check your System Settings in FCP and see if you have the display gamma set to Accurate. What FCP attempts to do is, in the Viewer window, adjust the gamma to match what it thinks you’ll see on a properly calibrated video monitor. IMHO it doesn’t do the greatest job, and there’s no way to really turn it off. The only two choices are “approximate” and “accurate.” Notice also that it does it on playback, but not when you’re stopped on or scrubbing over your timeline.

I can’t answer your frame rate issue, but I think SP is actually HDV dimensions, ie 1440 on the horizontal.

If all your footage has to go through AE, you could frame your comps there. You’re likely to get better results in resizing your footage there as well. Then just import your rendered clips to FCP, start a new sequence, and click Yes when it asks if you want to change your sequence settings after you drop in your first clip.
